Somewhat favorable but not entirely.

I'm not a huge fan of McCullough. He strikes me as being much like Stephen Ambrose. A sort of populist historian who find some feel good angle for his readers - mostly older and white - and avoids a lot of the messy controversies. A kind of Reader's Digest version of American history.
