John Bell Hood
One of the most effective brigade commanders in the American Civil War, he was the commander of Hood’s Texas Brigade, a unit that was effectively used as shock troops at Second Manassas.
The unit suffered heavy casualties in Farmer Miller’s Cornfield at Antietam.
John Bell Hood was injured at Gettysburg when an artillery shell exploded above him and the shrapnel rendered his arm useless for the rest of his life.
At the Battle of Chickamauga, September 19-20, 1863, Hood’s unit charged and broke the Union line, leading to a Confederate victory, but Hood himself was injured, forcing his leg to be amputated.
Even without one of his legs and without the use of one of his arms, he continued to serve the Confederate cause of his adopted home state, TEXAS.
After suffering defeat in his final battle of the Civil War, his men were recorded as adding a verse about him to the Yellow Rose of Texas song while they marched. The words were as follows:
My feet are torn and bloody,
My heart is full of woe,
I'm going back to Georgia
To find my uncle Joe [Johnston].
You may talk about your Beauregard,
You may sing of Bobby Lee,
But the gallant Hood of Texas
