MOSCOW, Russia (AP) -- For more than a century, entrepreneurs and engineers have dreamed of building a tunnel connecting the eastern and western hemispheres under the Bering Strait -- only to be brought up short by war, revolution and politics.

Now die-hard supporters are renewing their push for the audacious plan -- a $65 billion highway project that would link two of the world's most inhospitable regions by burrowing under a stretch of water connecting the Pacific with the Arctic Ocean.

Russians and Americans alike made their pitch for the project at a conference titled "Megaprojects of Russia's East," held Tuesday in Moscow.

"It's time to the rewrite the old slogan 'Workers of the world unite!"' said Walter Hickel, a former Alaska governor and interior secretary under President Richard Nixon. "It's time to proclaim, 'Workers -- Unite the world!"'

Combat:

Thanks for posting that. I read the article on the AP wire. What purpose would a connector tunnel serve besides trucking commerce between those two points? Do they want to add on to the Pan American Highway? If theyre going to spend 65 billion they might as well go and finish the section between Panama and Columbia aka the Darien Gap. Maybe they could get the FARC to donate some of the labor time - only kidding there. As a project manager for a heavy highway contractor in the SF Bay Area I cant even begin to think about constructing a job like this. Theyre going to need more then 65 billion, especially with the way the water table changes out there - not only up and down drastically but freezing and thawing as well. Additionally, the Russians are especially known for their great QC/QA programs. I dont know if anybody here has ever had the great experience of traveling on a Russian built road but I'll clue you in - they dont have potholes, they have craters - like tank trap size. I dont know where the funding would be coming from but I hope the Russians subcontract their portion of the work out if they ever do build this project. Just my thoughts.

Take Care

The russian side of the tunnel will leak. The American side will be plagued with cost over runs and not completed

Thank you for posting this article.

I believe that my next step will be to beat all of you to the punch and purchase a small plot of land right in front of the tunnel entrance. I'm having my "Last Gas Before Russia" signs made already. What do you think - $10 a gallon???

I always wanted better access to Siberia....

Plus this will allow you to get access to those customers right outside the tunnel. I know they're dying for soldiers
