Netflix has a new movie on called The Trial of the Chicago 7. About protestors on trial after the riots in Chicago in 60’s. Did not know the case before watched it.
Those that like courtroom dramas might like it. The black defendant (a Black Panther) was actually gagged on orders of the judge so could not ask questions. They put on trial 8 people for conspiracy when many did not know each other.
Interesting that main cast members are Brits with Sacha Baron Cohen as Abbie Hoffman, Eddie Redmayne as ex Mr Jane Fonda, Mark Roylance (Bridge of Spies and Dunkirk) as defence lawyer. Frank Langella is the Judge. Michael Keaton is a surprise witness, Ramsey Clarke the previous Federal AG, who is not even allowed to be revealed to the jury (not checked on real story but certainly a unique witness if that happened).
Seems to have been a lot of undercover cops at work which makes you wonder about what undercover work Chicago, Seattle, Portland cops etc are doing now.
Uses real footage from the times.
Originally was going to be a Spielberg movie and Will Smith was going to be in it. Got delayed although still associated with Dreamworks. Probably not a movie that would do that well in cinemas.
I enjoy court room dramas so liked it.
