Where to start;
First there is the decision of what to buy; a plane, a tank, a figure?

Then there is the problem of how to display them, I once bought a beautiful glass cabinet with lights and backing mirror only to find it is now too small. Do I spend $1000 on another display cabinet or more figures?

Scenes; I have limited ability and time poor so I try to purchase scenery, buildings , mats, trees, barricades etc; do I spend $100 on a building facade or more figures?

Now where to store the boxes; having found a safe storage solution the wife says ” when are you going to put the boxes away” to which I reply “they are already put away”. Next minute I am looking for another storage plan!

Then there is the decision to cull a series and concentrate on specific collections; however what to cull? American Civil War has now the least interest however it was the start of serious collecting and for sentimental reasons it must be kept; in fact new decision no culling at all!

The trials of ebay;
1. Placing a bid after one too many beers
2. Not reading the description properly (7th Calvary is not ACW but Indian NW Frontier!!!)
3. ‘that’s a great bargain I just have to have it’, the next day you realise you now have to collect a totally new era!

Going through un–displayed boxed sets and having absolutely no recollection of how or why the set was procured in the first place and, finally, not remembering which items go in what box!

“I want to go to the Chicago Toy Soldier Show in September” I say, “great” the wife replies “ that’s school holidays and I have always wanted to take the kids to New York” (?). My anticipated $5000 trip suddenly turns into a $50,000 one!

Lesson – your first display cabinet must always be your biggest as you will soon fill it.

Cheers

I once bid against myself on eBay- I was younger, and was using both my parents' eBay accounts, and I forgot which one I had bid with! But I hear you on the ranges- I am a devout Nap collector, but I have strayed from this path once for once or twice or 2000+ dollars (I have lately started selling that which was a mistake).

My father once accidentally added two zero's to his 'highest bid' price, luckily for him there was not a bidding war as he most certainly would have been victorious!

I once added one zero-8.70 to 87. Not as bad as your father's predicament, but I had to shell out $40 on something I was ambivalent about.
