Marie LaFleur Underwood, the French wife of Captain Thomas Underwood, an officer in the 1st Sublegion’s Infantry of the Legion of the United States, has traveled from Cincinnati to visit her husband’s encampment in the Northwest Territory. Captain Underwood and his men had participated in the campaign there against Blue Jacket and the tribes of the Western Confederacy. She is shown talking to one of the sentries guarding the perimeter of the camp. The culmination of the campaign was the Battle of Fallen Timbers on August 20, 1794. This American victory, under the command of General Anthony Wayne, ended British and Native American control of the area. The Legion of the United States was established in 1792 as part of a reorganization of the US Army that provided a combined force of cavalry, infantry, and artillery. Despite its success in the Northwest Indian War, the Legion was replaced by a regimental system in 1796. The hat worn by the private was characteristic of the Infantry of the Legion. It was round and had a strip of bearskin across the crown. Not visible in the photograph is a white plume on the left side of the hat indicating that the private is a member of the 1st Sublegion.
