Today i watch this western movie an dthere was a song that was a General Custer song.Something of an irish drink song or something.
Can anyone know the name of this song?
They mention in this movie but i forgot?

The Garry Owen is also played in the scene in the Mel Gibson movie Once Were Soldiers when the helicopters are taking off.

GarryOwen is also played by the Royal Irish Rangers as part of a medly forming their regimental march. Originally it was the regimental march of the Royal Irish Fusiliers.

My father was in the 101st Infantry of the Massachusetts Guard in 1940. Most members were Boston Irish. My father remembered marching in a local parade to Garry Owen and their WW I wrap around leggings unwrapping as they marched.

Garry Owen was an Irish drinking song that came to the US with the Irish immigration. It is a pleasant, jaunty air and has been used as a military song by several units, most famously by the 7th US Cavalry Regiment. Despite the public perception of the "loss of the 7th Cavalry" the regiment was not completely destroyed and was reconstituted in the US Army. The adoption of "CARS" (Combat Arms Regimental System) for the US Army in about 1957 kept the 7th Cavalry as a "lineage" unit. US Army lineages are not as direct and close as the British system, they exist to try and lend some history and tradition to a unit. Garry Owen has also followed through various unit traditions in the US Army.

It's also a fun little song to sing to ones self while painting toy soldiers :)

By the way, US citizens might remember that our national anthem is based on the tune of an English bar song!
