I've finally got some of the Conte Spartans - and they are just magnificent! It's got me thinking about the possibilities for the Romans, whenever they might emerge. Initially I'm speculating on what playsets might look like:

1. Punic War - though title wise it's problematic - perhaps better namded after Hannibal? Anyway, Romans 60 or so including 6-8 cavalry. Hannibal - with bandaged eye - on an elephant, Spanish spearman and Numidian light cavalry and infantry. Perhaps some heavy African infantry too. And a bunch of blue plastic celts.

I'm unsure what colour plastic the Romans should be. Red seems out, given the Spartans, bronze and gold don't quite work either. I think silver, given that's the colour of Roman armour but again, it doesn't quite seem 'right'. I'm interested to hear what others think.

As for other sets - Ceaser in Gaul - lots of Celts and perhaps a Vercingetorix and defensive works for the battle of Alesia.

Boudiccea - allows for civilians and British Chariots

Sparticus and or / gladiator/Collesium set - lots of gladiators grey plastic - or a wide variety of colours), animals, civilians/spectators and a stadium.

Any others that come to mind or a particular figure or sub set or accessory that should be included?

Just going on a hunch but i think if Conte did plastic Romans he would do imperial Romans.
as his ship and metal's are imperial.
so punic wars are out.

Possibly but I'm sure I read on his site that with the possibilities opened by the multi-pose Spartans that he could finally look to do a very spectacular plastic Roman army. I've been sitting here this afternoon playing with the poses. Four of the same figure but four entirely different poses - helped even more with a mix of the three colours - they are just wonderful......

My 'playsets' are a bit Roman Enemy centric, perhaps the Battle of Zama? Bizarrely most of the best known Roman battles seem to be Roman defeats. Another, 'enemy' that comes to mind are Jewish Zealots. And it would be good to see some auxillaries as well. As for celts, there would be a mix of 'wild' (nakedish and spiked hair and covered in woad designs - featured notably, if shaky on historical accuracy in Braveheart) and more well to do warriors - pants, well armed, torcs. Oh and for Boudeccia I'd like some Druids too.

Probably room for a Goth set too (that's right in black coats, with suitably down expressions). A lot of the Viking figures could 'ride again' here. He'll need to be careful with sizes though. The Spartans are almost a head higher than the Vikings.
