Hi, I am very new to the whole collecting business and I would really love to muster a bunch of 54mm glossy troops (preferably zulu war era south wales borderers) to start my miniature army. When I went on the internet looking for some soldiers I realized they were all out of my price range. I really don't mind if the quality of the soldiers isn't that good or not I as just looking for some cheaper tin soldiers. Are there any???

thanks,
Rob

Britain's glossy Zulu figures are still around usually sell for around $22 each, only a small range, check Britain's site for what they released. Robin.

Is there anything similar to those types of soldiers that come in bulk??? I really want to get into little wars the hg wells game. Is there any way to paint plastic figures to make them look glossy???

Yes--use gloss paints.

There's not really anything like an instant collection (unless someone dies and you inherit his collection, or can buy it at an estate auction). But depending on what you're looking for, and whether or not you're willing to or interested in painting your own, you could:

--buy plastic figures in small scale, as you've suggested, and paint them
--buy metal wargaming figures, which are also in small scales, and paint them
--buy old toy soldiers in auctions, at shows or elsewhere on the second-hand market, and paint them
--buy new castings and paint them

The last two suggestions would work well, if you're interested in getting figures in the traditional scale of 54mm, and since you've indicated that you want to get large numbers of figures quickly.

You probably don't want to buy finished figures from contemporary makers, because you won't be able to get them in large numbers, and they won't come cheap.

Hope that helps, prosit!

Hi Robert - I would back up what the Baron told you. IF they just HAVE to be metal - then buying unpainted castings - and learn how to paint them yourself - is the way to go.

Have a look, as an example - at Dorset Soldiers on the Internet - and click on "Out of Africa", where you can see examples of action figures of SWB's and Zulus - at under $5 each, unpainted. Snag is - the postage from UK to USA may be the killer - and may also incur customs charges.

I'm fortunate enough to live reasonably close to Dorset Soldiers Shop - so can order by Internet - and visit to pick them up, when I'm in the UK. I thus have an enjoyable day out - and get my figures at bargain basement prices. Then, I get the further enjoyment from painting them myself. There are plenty of painters in the USA - who will doubtless help you with paint selection and tips on painting them - including Brad ( The Baron).

So - the solution to your problem MAY be to (a) find a supplier in the USA of the castings you want - who is (b) close enough for you to visit. Not the easiest thing for you to find these days, with Toy Soldier shops getting scarcer to find - but IF they have to be metal - and you want them cheaply in large numbers - that's probably the way to go. Mr Robin Yates has listed a grand collection of Zulu (both sides) that are comparitively cheap (at least the starting price). Have a look at Ebay Australia Toy Soldiers (easy to navigate only ten pages or so of listings).

I realise postage is an issue however it is worth a look.

Cheers

Scott
