G’day Wayne,
Greetings from beautiful Chicago and very many thanks for that great little video of the massed bands of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines on parade in London!
Being a former ‘bootneck’ myself it’s always a pleasure to see and hear a Royal Marine Band on show...A ‘Massed Band’ is 10 times better.
The second march they played is called ‘The Voice of the Guns’ and a personal favourite. Written by Kenneth J. Alford, the British version of the great Philip Sousa, it was prominently featured in the movie ‘Lawrence of Arabia’.
A Royal Marine Band also played it many moons ago when myself and 23 other young ‘bootnecks’ marched onto the parade square at CTCRM [Commando Training Centre Royal Marines] Lympstone in Devon to receive our ‘Green Berets’ after 32 weeks of sometimes pure hell, occasional terror and always physically exhausting training.
How often during those 8 gruelling months did I say to myself, “ I must be mad...I f******g volunteered for this!!!”
But, on that particular day, on that parade square, with a Royal Marine Band playing ‘The Voice of the Guns’...I felt a million bucks and so bloody proud. It made all the blood, sweat and tears worth it.
And all for a little ‘Green Beret’ and the right to be called a ‘Royal Marine Commando’.
‘PER MARE PER TERRAM’ [By Sea And By Land].
Thank you once more Wayne, all the best,
207246 Marine Neilson A.C. [Andy].
