Hello,

I am seeking everyone's professional opinion on a subject I have long wrestled with. About a year ago, I bought a circa 1988 set of Mignot Bavarian lancers still tied in the box. (Louis, I actually bought these from your friend Doug....small world!) I have sat on them for a year, actually they have sat in my closet while I have done other things, but you get my drift. So my question to you is, should I untie these figures and put them on my self? Or should I leave them tied in the box? I would really love to add these to the displays, but I realize that original figures tied in the box are quite rare. That said, these are not early figures.....I am really unsure. I don't want to ruin their collectible value, but I don't collect figures for the investment, I collect what I love.

What do you think? Is it sacrilegious to set these guys free?

Cheers

Cole

Cole,
Whatever you do is OK by me. They are your figures. What would I do? Like you, I don't collect for investment. Maybe they will be of some value in the future, but I don't really have a "vested" interest in that someday value. My value is the appreciation I have for them now. Perhaps displaying them in the box without untieing them will allow you to enjoy them. Perhaps untieing them and putting them on a shelf for your viewing pleasure will allow you to enjoy them. Perhaps leaving them in the closet and taking them out occassionally will allow you to enjoy them. Me, I would put them on a shelf and display them with my other figures allowing my to enjoy them the way I perfer. But that's just me and I'm crazy anyway so don't listen to me.;)

My set of Mignot Imperial Guard were tied in the box and thought the same thing, would it ruin the set if I cut them out? But what fun is it to leave them in the box? I cut them out and put them on the shelf where I can see them.

Hi Guys,

If they were one hundred years old I say display them in the box on a stand of some sort but I seriously doubt you will take any value away if you remove them from the box and display them. Of course I would be sure to keep the box for the future if you or your heirs decide to sell them.

All the best

Dave

Hi Cole,

Since you asked...

I would not remove them from the box. While the figures are not yet true vintage figures, they are almost 20 years old. Finding Mignot figures still tied in the box after 20 years, in my opinion, constitutes a rarity. I would consider displaying them in the box, but I would never remove them from it.

Displaying a box of figures can be an exciting challenge as to where and how to do it. I believe Dave mentioned placing the box on a stand, which might be a very good idea provided you have the right space for it. Also, why you display the figures in the box can be an interesting topic of conversation while you show your collection to interested guests.

I believe you want encouragement to remove the figures from the box, but you asked for honest opinions. I am sorry if my opinion only confuses the issue for you. The bottom line is:

It is your set of figures and you may display them (or not) in any manner you please! ;)

Warmest personal regards,

Pat

Cole,

The only parallel to your situation that I know of are the presentation boxes that K & C used to make when they made glossy soldiers. They're fabulous looking. I know that Larry Lo has several of these boxes, with (I believe) the soldiers still in the original cellophane and he hasn't taken the soldiers out of the boxes.

I frankly like Dave's suggestion. There may be something to keeping them in the box but displaying them that way. It's the whole effect, so to speak.

Ultimately, the decision is yours and you should do whatever makes you happy.

Find another set and display those. Keep your mint set mint for the time being. Trust me, you'll be happier that way.

Hello,

Here are some pictures of the set.

Thanks everyone for your advice. I was looking for everyone's actual opinion on this. I was personally leaning towards taking them out of the box because I often forget about them in the closet and I don't actually have room at the moment to display them in the box. That said, I think I am going to keep them in the box.... I appreciate the advice!

Thanks

Cole

Hi Cole,

Lovely set. There is another option you might also be able to use the type of hangers used by people who display large dishes or china by using a metal spring loaded hanger that grabs the back of the dish/box and can be hung on the wall. Maybe an idea but I will also say that keeping them mint is always a good notion and maybe you can develop a method where you rotate you display or chage it once or twice a year to keep it interesting and that way items long in storage can be brought out and shared. Either way thats a great set!

All the best

Dave

Hi Cole,

I am relieved that you are deciding to retain the figures in the box. Since viewing the pictures you have posted of the set, I am convinced, more than ever, that you are making a very good decision.

I noticed that Dave suggested a "wall hanger" for dishes as a possible display tool. You might want to explore Dave's idea. However, I think an even more effective idea is the use of "Plate Stands." Plate stands are used to display plates, tea set trays, etc. The plate stands resemble small easels and they would allow the box to be tilted at an angle which would be excellent for viewing. Further, plate stands do not rely on springs or other tension mechanisms to hold the object in place. As my wife collects miniature tea sets, we have several hundreds of these plate stands in our home. If you want further information on these display tools, let me know and perhaps I can help you choose an appropriate plate stand that will meet your needs.

Again, I think you are making a decision with which you will be happy in the years to come.

Warmest personal regards,

Pat :)

I agree with Pat. Now that I have seen how beautiful that set is and how taking them out of the box would definitely change their presentation, I too would keep them in their original box. The idea of displaying them with some kind of display device seems like a good one to me.

Seeing that picture helps me to understand why you collect the figures you do. They look absolutely fantastic and I too would be proud to have them in my collection. And where do you live and what time will you be gone   :) :)

Pat, a very good idea using plate stands. That is exactly what I used to display my Britains Limited Edition sets on (the new diecast figures not the lead hollow cast). This way they are still mint in the box (a bit like Stinky Pete in Toy Story 2) and worth a lot more at resale.

Regards

Jeff

Pat and everyone,

Thanks so much for the advice! I am going to go to an art store downtown and pick up one of those stands. I think these figures will look lovely displayed that way. Part of me will miss them on parade next to my Vistula and Polish Lancers....but I see the value of keeping them in the box.
I am glad everyone liked the figures. Hopefully I am subtlety and not so subtlety encouraging others to take up Mignot collecting:)

Cheers!

Cole
