toy soldier shows in new york new jersey? (1 Viewer)

Matt,

There's one in Queens, one out on Long Island, and several in New Jersey each year. There's one in New Jersey the same weekend as the Symposium in early March each year. I'm sure George (Warrior) can give you dates and places.

I understand that the NJHMA will be sponsoring a show this coming eptember in Wayne, NJ at the Wayne, P.A.L., but I don't have the details as yet.

Unless Ed Gries decides on running another spring show, it looks like there will be not be a strictly "toy soldier show" in the NYC/NJ area until Saturday, October 2nd, when The Marxman presents the New Yorker Toy Soldier Show at the Hotel Adria Conference Center.

Mark your calendars' because the 28th Annual East Coast Toy Soldier Show & Sale, “The Hackensack Show,” returns on Sunday, October 31, 2010. Full details at: www.vintagecastings.com

The Wayne show used to be in April or so, which was probably a better date than September, when people will. E thinking about Chicago. The Hackensack show is definitely the show for the East Coast.

The MFCA Show and Mart is coming up a couple of weeks, too, May 7th and 8th. If you're in Brooklyn, it's not that far of a hop down I-95 to Philly and Valley Forge, where the show has returned after two years in Wilmington DE.

Prost!

The Valley Forge (King of Prussia) Show used to be one of the big three shows in the United States. Andy Neilson and the K&C team used to attend it, along with the OTSN and Westcoaster. It would be nice if upon returning to Valley Forge, the show returned to its former glory.

Here's a link to our show website, with a list of the dealers who will be there.

Yes, Louis, K&C haven't been at our show for several years, perhaps 4 or 5, since before we had to move from the Valley Forge Convention Center to the Chase Center in Wilmington. But there are still plenty of vendors, not to mention the exhibition of painted figures and models, which ranks with the World Expo, the Chicago show--MMSI, not the toy soldier show--and Euromilitaire, in the quality of the work and the prestige of the awards.

Prost!

When a show is moved the drop is off is huge. When I did shows, I had good sales at Schutzen Park but when Ed moved the show the drop off was 50+%. Not even worth attending as a vendor.

I might do the Valley Forge to sell a large amount of plastics if they return to VF, if they have table available.

Say, does anybody have the contact information to sign up?

The old Schuttzen Park show which is now in Secaucus hasn't been that good of late. This year was a bit more interesting than 2009 but not by much.

I'm glad they're returning the show to Valley Forge but in the last two years I went before the move it seemed to be losing its attraction.

@Gideon, you can contact our vendor coordinator, Dennis Sozna, at sozmfca10@gmail.com. However, we're sold out, so we'll only be able to put you on our wait list, in case a space becomes available.

As far as moving to a different venue goes, you all need to remember that exhibition halls aren't cheap, let alone free. We didn't move to the Chase Center because we wanted to, we had to, because the Valley Forge Convention Center priced us out. Also, they had pushed us out of their larger ground floor hall, into the smaller, lower level space, several years before. We're a non-profit organization (501(c)3), and the increasing cost and the less desirable space drove us to move.

The real advantage of the VFCC is that the exhibition area and hotel are all under one roof, and that's it. If there were a hotel more conveniently situated to the Chase Center, we would have stayed there.

As it was, we called on the services of one of our members, who is a corporate attorney, to negotiate on behalf of the Society and work out a better deal at the VFCC, and so, we moved back.

But remember that the local township charges an itinerant merchant fee, and in the intervening two years, they've also implemented an amusement tax. So that's a disadvantage to Valley Forge as well.

If I had my druthers, I'd go back to Wilmington, whether there were a hotel next to the Center or not. The Chase Center is a very nice facility, just a couple of turns off I-95, and there are no taxes or fees.

Prost!

Sorry to hear about that, never good to hear about fellow vendors losing sales.

My experience at both shows has been a bit different. I hated the location and the hall for Schutzen, you needed a coal miners helmet to see in the place and the load in was a nightmare, those early morning set ups are the worst, everyone trying to shoehorn themselves into the place at one time, it's amateur hour at best.

Since moving to Secaucus, my sales have gone up every year and the set up is the night before if you're willing, makes things so much easier. Also, the hall is much nicer, well lit, the load in is a breeze.

Valley Forge for me the two years prior to the move was pretty good, again the AM load in down that ramp is a nightmare, they only give you four hours to unload and set up, almost impossible for folks like myself, Hobby Bunker, Relic Golden Amusements, etc, etc, who take 6, 7 or 8 tables like we do. It's a joke really to give that little amount of set up time.

When they moved two years ago to the Chase Center, my sales jumped through the roof, same thing last year, I thought the crowd was bigger, more folks from DC, Baltimore, etc, etc who did not come to Valley Forge, I really liked that hall, huge, well lit, a nice new facility.

Now it's back to Valley Forge and I heard the dealers are all around the perimeter of the hall with the exhibits in the middle, which if true will be a real joy come Saturday trying to work past that bottleneck out to my van.

I really wish the show had stayed in Willmington.

From what I've heard, the show is sold out at this point, I might be wrong. I noticed Michigan Toy Soldiers, a fixture at the show for years, is not on the vendor list, I heard he could not get tables, not sure if this is true or not.........

I hated Schutzen too. I was in a dark area even compared to other spots in the place. Even so, I had a couple great shows in terms of sales.

Problem is once you make a change to a persons (especially a collectors) routine, many just won't show. When Ed moved the show, I had such a lousy day that I just never went back to one of his shows. It was really bad. He looked pretty disappointed as he was walking around to the tables and talking with people.

I totally understand how venues will up their prices and that's a shame when it happens. Not to use the word 'but', but it inevitably impacts attendance.

I had no idea KOP has all those fees.
