Hi Guys,

I am going to be traveling to China with my daughter on a School Trip in about 15 months and I am beginning my research into the Toy Soldiers I might be able to find when there. What I am looking for is figures that were made for the local market and not the things we can buy here. I recently saw some Brass Toy Soldiers that were probably locally made for a niche market in the Shanghai area. The one I saw were from an Estate sale and were great because they were brass and rather unique. I have figures from all over Europe in many styles and materials and would really like to add something from China that isnt generally found in the states. So for all you world travelers out there what advice can you give? We will be hitting the major sights and i would love to be able to add a few figures from there to my collection.

Thanks

Dave

Never been there Dave ( lucky you ), but the first thing I thought of was - Terracotta Army. I've read it's in Xi'an Province - and it has a museum!

Now, there's gotta be souvenirs sold there - and you can even find replica items of them on e-bay, so they do exist.

IF YOU GET THERE - don't forget to take a million pics for us poor souls eh? jb

Hi Johnny

I will certainly take a ton of photos when we go there! Its top of the list for places to see and look for soldiers.

I have been to China nearly 25 times (I had a team over there for many years - IT business). I also had people in Japan, Korea and Taiwan. My first time in China was in 96 in Beijing and they were looking at us like we were coming from Mars, basically no cars only bicycles back then. Beijing is great for historical sites (Forbidden city, Summer palace, Temple of heaven, etc.,). I think I went to the Great Wall 7 times and saw it in all seasons. I also went to Shanghai a couple times (actually my older son in currently studying there for a semester). Shanghai is more sophisticated than Beijing and while there is not many old monuments, the international concession district and the Bund with all those crazy skyscrapers are interesting. Near Shanghai I would recommend to see Suzhou, known as the "Venice of the East" and the silk factories and do the private gardens tour. If you have time I would go to Guilin to see the karstic landscape (like Halong Bay in Vietnam). I did not see any toy soldier store but I do have a few terracotta soldiers :smile2:. The only toy soldiers store I found was in Taipei (Taiwan) but they were more expensive over there than in the US...Have a nice trip!

Hi Mirof,

Thanks for the memories. I was at Toymax and the Richmond Centre. The latter had a small bookshop amazingly packed with militaria books.

I've been in China 14 years and don't think I've ever seen a TS shop!

Plenty of kit shops here in Hong Kong, but only 1.5 TS shops; KnC and a place in Chai Wan.

There are however a growing number of Wathammer/40k shops

What the hell kind of school plans trips to China? Not to mention 15 months in advance? Just asking 'cuz I never heard of anything like that... But have fun.:p

It was surprising to me as well. They have a couple of teachers here who do this trip every two years for a very small number of students. It is costly but when we saw the trip schedule and places we would see I said yes. Lets hope it is as cool as it sounds! As for the kind of school its a public high school but they have an International Baccalaureate Program which is pretty tough, AP on steroids in my opinion, but it was the same program my kids were in over in Europe so it made sense for them to continue in this sort of program.
