The talk (tweets) coming out of the US now are insinuating tariffs of 25% on all China goods.
This would certainly put a crimp in sales from most TS makers to the US collectors.
Hopefully its just talk at this point and an agreement will be forthcoming.
No doubt that China has taken advantage of the US and other countries when it comes to government subsidized costs (dumping) and stealing intellectual properties.

Be they Republican, Democrat, Independent or whatever ... jockeying for a good initial bargaining position is normally the first strategy employed.
China has always wanted thing one way .... THEIR WAY .... but dumping and intellectual theft.

I guess the biggest question is who-needs-who more? :rolleyes2:

If a 25% hit is coming then my TS collecting will most likely be adversely affected. Actually possibly multiple areas.
Let's hope a lot of smoke and no fire!!!

If our trade war with China escalates all imported goods will be impacted.......hopefully both parties will come to their senses.
It looks like a game of "chicken" and we consumers will suffer.

Even if it ends soon, the effects will be for a long time.

I received information that Hong Kong may be exempt from these new Tariffs. I wonder if Andy could chime in and tell us what he knows.

I believe there is a more than ample supply of miniature soldier figures available in dealer inventories, second hand offerings and on eBay, among many other places. I think we will all be fine.

On the bright (and dark) side: If the tariffs do hit K&C and others, prices of figures already in collections will rise. Dem evil speculators/hoarders will make out as well, though!

It isn't like prices are not already outrageous. The prices are so high now some manufacturers no longer list them on their announcements of new items. You have to look them up. I guess that they don't want to stem enthusiasm right off the bat. The Chinese export a lot more than they import. So they are at greater risk playing a game of tariff chicken. And it is long overdue to have an even playing field. My guess is that this gets resolved fairly soon.

Maybe so but HK is not the place of manufacture.

K & C's home office is in HK.

So is JJD's.

Let the US government prove otherwise exactly WHERE their products are manufactured.

Thomas Gunn is based in the UK; so will imports from them be whacked too under this ****show of a tariff; again, let the US government prove their products are produced in China.

First Legion and W. Britains bring their products into the country via containers, they are send to their respective warehouses and then shipped to dealers/retail customers.

Will their products get whacked too?

This is absolutely unbelievable.

Why is it unbelievable? I don’t want to turn this political but it probably will but if you voted for Trump, he was very clear about his concerns about the balance of trade with China as well as their theft of IP. This can’t be a surprise. I don’t agree with him on most issues but on this one, especially IP theft, he does have a point.

not a Trump fan...
but I do like his stance on this...
it's estimated that Chinese theft of American IP currently costs between $225 billion and $600 billion annually...
not to mention lost jobs...

Yeah, let's not turn this into a political thread.

When it goes through, we'll see how it impacts consumer prices across the board on the items it's targeting.

Let it play out and we'll go from there.

Sounds like a solid plan to me.

Having started in the high tech electronics industry in 1971 I saw first hand how China took advantage of the US and many other industrialized countries.
Granted we turned a blind eye so the Chinese economy could grow and enter the industrialized world. Many believed this would open their economy and
turn them away from Communism. Japan was also guilty of taking advantage and it certainly helped them become a manufacturing power house after the war.

I have done business with China since the late 70's, much of it through Hong Kong until the later 80's. They used government subsidies, dumping, currency manipulation
and the theft of intellectual property to prop up their economy.......and it worked. But now its time they play fair and compete on a level playing field.

I agree with a tough stance against China but I don't care for Trade Wars, they don't work. i also don't believe in "twitter diplomacy". Having visited China more than
50 times and doing business with them, both import and export, for almost 40 years you know that "saving face" is very important to them. Negotiate hard and get
your allies to side with you, do it quietly behind the scenes and use the carrot and stick approach. They do need our markets but they have huge reserves and can
wait this out. In the mean time everyone loses.

And most important keep our toy soldier prices within reason!

It’s already had a negative impact. Ask the farmers.

I couldn’t agree more! :wink2:

There is a lot of public squawking, by both sides, which is mainly for domestic PR purposes.
Both the US and China want a deal. That we know, for certain.

China has to stop stealing, or forcing the handover, of proprietary US technologies, and engaging in state sponsored cyber warfare against private US businesses and non state actors like Universities and Research centers. FULL STOP. Non negotiable.

We are a much more important export market to them than they are to us. We buy $420 billion more of Chinese products than they buy from us.
China imports of both goods and services account for less than 10% of total US exports. In total they buy $230B overall, which in the big picture of an $18 trillion economy is not a huge amt.

A deal will get done but there will be more lots more posturing, pontificating and poofery before it’s resolved.

Don’t let the rhetoric get you down. It’s part of the game. Trump will not back down. He simply can’t and hope to be re-elected.
