This discussion always comes around when we approach a milestone number. The total count doesn't get me too excited. Participation is more important than sheer number of registered members, or better, participation levels need to be examined at the same time as the number of registered members. For example, how many of the 3000 visit the forum daily, weekly, or less frequently, how many have a high number of posts, say, 100 or more, how many have added galleries or started threads, and so on.

My guess, from a relatively quick run-through of the membership list is that almost a full 33% of the list is dead weight, ie., the member hasn't posted or even signed in a very long time (over 2 years). -- Al

What was the prize? A ruler for scale discussions or a history book so that the new member can get a head start on arguing about historical accuracy?
The prize was going to be the book titled "How Many Rivets Could a Rivet-Counter Count if a Rivet-Counter Could Count Rivets?". Unfortunately the publisher missed the deadline and the prize was withdrawn. :wink2: -- Al

I think there should be maybe something like a still a member button you have to hit at least once a year or be removed from the members list.I'm sure there are many that look at the forum but don't post,there are people who left the hobby and just don't come on here anymore,I'm sure that a few have died but were unknown to others so it wasn't posted that they died.You get the idea.I'v signed up to a couple of forums before but for whatever reason didn't post on it or quit going on it.

3,000 is a nice number, but all of these points are valid.
I talk to a lot of collectors at shows who have never registered here, they come here to read and catch up on the latest news or the latest thread about the wrong color buttons, the incorrect type of shoelaces or the latest installment of the great tank track debate.
I sometimes wonder if they are the smart ones.

Well, we are at 3,008 as of today. Seems like our member base is still growing. I know to some it is only a number but it appears we are heading in the right direction ! :wink2:

An impressive number. Now if only we could get some participation from the great silent majority within these numbers. A quick glance show that over 900 of these members have never posted, not once. Another 775 (give or take) have only posted 1-5 times. That's over half the membership with little or no participation. I guess that's the way it always is though. Some of us are just naturally gabby.:wink2::rolleyes2:^&grin -- Al

Don't get your hopes up, Al. The latest member has joined to ask our help to ID a set of toy soldiers. We're always eager to help, of course, but I don't expect that person to stick around, once his question is asked. I think that scenario accounts for a good number of members on the roster.
Maybe we ought to purge the rolls from time to time and remove users with low post counts, who haven't posted since joining.

Hi all,
It is the nature of forums that the majority don't post often, that many people read as guests and don't sign up at all and there are always those who sign up never to return. However I frequently get requests for assistance in re-accessing accounts that haven't been used, sometimes for years and each time it happens it reminds me that purging the rolls because someone hasn't been active over a specific amount of time would no doubt delete an account that someone really does still want to keep. When we hear of a member's passing we do change their title to 'Memoriam Member' (thanks to Jazzeum for coming up with the title to indicate they have passed on).
I do occasionally prune the roles (especially in tracking down and deleting spam accounts- I spent hours and hours a year or two ago hunting down spam accounts hiding in the weeds) but if a person has ever posted and you delete their account, it deletes all their posts as well. That would make swiss cheese of the archived threads.
I do also look for accounts where the person never returned to the forum after signing up and they do usually get deleted unless I happen to know the person and that they are actively collecting. It could easily be a full-time job just monitoring the forum roles but I think my time is better spent running Treefrog and keeping the forum itself running smoothly :smile2:.
In the meantime, it's great that 3000 people are interested in the military miniature hobby enough to sign up on a forum dedicated to all things toy soldiers!
