TRIVIA---since today is Friday the 13th, this is trivia for the horror movie FRIDAY THE 13TH.
Betsy Palmer starred in the classic horror movie FRIDAY THE 13TH because her Mercedes-Benz broke down, so she needed a new car, “I had a Mercedes, which I had for a number of years, and it broke down on the Connecticut turnpike. So I said to myself, ‘I need a new car...'” Her daughter suggested a Volkswagen Scirocco which sold for $10,000. Palmer had been offered $1,000 a day for ten days to appear in FRIDAY THE 13TH, "My agent called and said, 'How would you like to be in a movie?' I said, 'Great, I haven't done a movie since the 1960s.' He said, 'It’s 10 days’ work, they’ll pay you $1,000 a day.' I said, 'Great, I want to buy a car. It’ll just cover the car, perfect.' He said, 'There’s a drawback … it’s a horror film.' I said, Oh, no.’"
Palmer felt the $10,000 from FRIDAY THE 13Th would pay for the Scirocco, so she asked to read the script, "I said, 'What a piece of junk. Nobody is ever going to see this. This will come and go."
Palmer decided she really needed a new car, which the horror movie would pay for, so she reluctantly accepted the role. FRIDAY THE 13TH had a paltry $500,00 budget, but it earned a dazzling $39.7 million at the box office.
Palmer appeared in FRIDAY THE 13TH because she needed $10,000 to buy a Volkswagen Scirocco to replace her broken-down Mercedes-Benz.
