They just finished filming the reamke of "True Grit".
This is one of my all time favorite westerns.
.I’m not sure if Jeff Bridges can handle John Wayne’s part.
Glen Campbell was the weak link in the original movie, that character hasn’t improved much with Matt Damon
instead. (I did like Campbells rendition of the theme song though). I will like to see the finished result anyway though….

However if I were casting a new "True Grit", here would be MY cast:
Ed Harris – Reuben “Rooster” Cogburn
John Cusack - La Beouf (Texas Ranger)
Billy Bob Thornton – “Lucky” Ned Pepper
Miley Cyrus – Mattie Ross
Steve Buscemi - Tom Chaney

Why,why, why???.Why can't they just leave it alone.True Grit is one of John Waynes best films and one of about four of his that I really enjoy. Some films should just not be remade, full stop.

Well as with any movie, the good news if you don't want to see it, you certainly don't have to. True Grit was one of the Duke's best movies, of which I humbly think he had more than just four.;) That said, Jeff is a much better actor and the difference between Damon and Campbell is off the charts so I will give it a try when it comes to disk.

I do prefer Walt's casting suggestions however. Harris and Cusack would have been phenomenal.

Remake True Grit!:( Has the world gone mad? This is blasphemy. The Duke cannot be topped as Rooster. And remade by the Coen brothers? A most unconventional pairing with a western. I have a high regard for the Coen brothers but they make "off center" films. Don't know how they will play a western classic like True Grit. -- Al

Absolutely, what next,'The Great Escape','Magnificent seven'.Some things are just meant to be left unspoilt:cool:

My 14 year old daughter is on a hate Miley Cyrus kick.

The rest of the cast sounds great. Steve Buscemi is the best "creep."

I hope this version does not turn out as bad as when they cast Will Smith as James West in the Wild Wild West movie.

I also agree that "True Grit" is a classic that really should be left alone.

Walt

Might be that True Grit is like all the other "classics" that have been remade of Louis Lamour, Zane Grey, and other's western stories. It might the turn of another generation to try it on film.

"True Grit" without John Wayne will be like remaking "Glory" with no black actors!

I just can't see it. The Duke did that one better than anyone else could! I agree that the Glen Campbell character was weak.

Now I suppose they will remake "The Searchers" as a musical comedy????

Gary, how does any of that lead to any of that? You can watch a few classics with the DVD commentaries and hear the wheeling, dealing, and accidents that put your favorite actor in that classic role. Ronald Reagan as Rick in Casablanca?

I've the perfect cast for the remake of The Searchers. The one and only Mel Gibson as Ethan Edwards with Leonardo DiCaprio as Martin Pauly. If that image isn't enough to make you vomit, then I don't know what will.:p -- Al

Newcomer Hailee Steinfeld will play Mattie, Barry Pepper, the sniper from Saving Private Ryan will fill Robert Duvall's big shoes as "Lucky" Ned Pepper. Matt Damon will play LaBoef, and Jeff Bridges will be Rooster Cogburn. "The Dude" from the Big Lebowski is going to take Ned Pepper back to Fort Smith to hang? That's bold talk for a one eyed fat man. I don't generally care for remakes, but I find this interesting. It is directed by the Coen Brothers, and they have a good body of work. It is either going to be magnificent or a big steaming pantload.

If I had to choose any of the John Wayne movies to re-make (other than the Alamo which has been redone) I would like to see them make a triolgy out of the "Fort Apache", "She Wore A Yellow Ribbon" movies. I reallly think the originals are classics, but there is a lot that can be done with the characters and events in those movies.

Yes I agree, although they are very good they do contain a fair bit of John Wayne's 'Hammy' acting,so could well stand a remake.

They will play it their way, which will definitely be different and likely worth seeing I think. FWIW, the Coen's eat blasphemy for breakfast.:D

There is no doubt that the Coen Brothers make great films but I have reservations about this cast. Bridges seems to me an ok choice as he can pull off the drunk he will be asked to play. I like both Damon and Pepper (remember him as Maris in "61"?), but I don't see either of them as western types on horses. Pepper as a killer will either pull off thepart well or look totally overmatched. Still, I agree, it will be interesting. But one should not fool with the original perfection. -- Al
