I'm with you on this one, Scott.

I trust nobody based on their profession/vocation. I do however trust individuals based on their character and past performance, in spite of their vocation.

Post of the day, maybe the year.................... and true for me as well.

Good on ya! Faith in someone is without evidence. TRUST is with evidence.

I believe these surveys/polls were done to show how American voters have lost faith in politicians and the system.
I was surprised that the military gained the most votes for TRUST but I assume they are referring to the "rank and file" not the Pentagon.
Just thought it was interesting. I agree that you have to judge the individual and not make generalizations......although politicians would top my list of MISTRUST!

I KNOW I wouldn't trust an alternitive such as military dictators, divine right monarchy, a theocracy or some global corporation.

All of this talk about "Trust" reminded me of a sign in my local Fish'n'Chip shop - when I was a lad,

(but a distant memory now - I'm afeared)

Anyway, the sign read......................IN GOD WE TRUST - THE REST PAY CASH.

That will do for me. jb

The late Jean Shepherd has a book of his stories with a similar title.

"In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash (1966, ISBN 0-385-02174-7) is a book of short stories by Jean Shepherd [1].

It was first published by Doubleday in New York in October 1966.

Many of the short stories in the book, including several set outside of the Christmas season, were later used as the basis for the 1983 movie A Christmas Story as well as the 1994 movie It Runs in the Family. The book was later reissued by Main Street Books in 1991 and was adapted into audio form by the recording agency AFB for the Talking Book Service of the NLS (Talking Book Number TB 01526).

The title is a play on the United States motto, "In God We Trust"."

You don't have to trust Mr. Shepherd but much of his childhood was made up for the stories.

In general I would agree with the list of trustables- including the "Pentagon"...after all, if I didn't have trust in the people at the top who make the game plans, why play the game?? I'm generally inclined to be far more trusting of individuals who work for the benefit of their fellow man- medical personnel especially- I think surgeons and doctors are individuals who are really very very special. While me and law enforcement folks generally don't see eye to eye on policy/ law type issue, I have known enough of them on a personal level to trust them implicity. Fire fighters- well, my local guys burst into my house last december in an effort to save it- pretty awesome of them.

I find it difficult working amongst the business community however. I've seen really horrible examples of greed but also CEO's who's generosity knows no bounds.

Politicians,,,, well,, I don't think I have lost my faith in them but more the political process in the US in general. I certainly believe they are a good reason why I may feel that way but I believe that there are other factors at play. Nuff said on that.

I can say that I do not trust anyone who is in the business of marketing, developing and creating toy soldiers for a living- they have created exceptional burdens on my financial health and emotional well being!!!! {sm4}{sm4}

Some of the best salesmen I know are medical "professionals". Boy, they say, you really NEED that test/procedure/surgery etc. It also happens to be what they do, and it happens to cost buku dollares, but hey...:) People should take all and any advice, medical included, with a grain of salt.

Business people, criminals excluded, are there to serve their customers the best they can in a profitable manner. There is nothing disingenuous about it. Those who dont serve their customers fairly or with ingegrity will eventually suffer the consequences. Fairest system ever created (originally by mother nature)!

I don't think the proprietor of our local Chip Shop ( in Cardiff, South Wales) was a Mr.Shepherd - from memory it was more like Mr Popadopadopolos -( or something like that. He had a big moustche - if that helps? This was way back in the 1950's - so significantly before that publication date (1966). I do remember that one day a big American car rolled up - and this guy went in for a bag of the best! Caused quite a flutter amongst the locals - it did! He didn't have a moustache - I remember that.

Do you think it was "The Good Shepherd" himself?? Maybe he got the idea for the book from there?

Bit of a long shot I s'pose - but you never know............. he payed cash - I was watching.............:D:D:D johnnybach

Re: Trust fun "fact"

I thought it was 1600s but it's really 1800s.

"...."Put your trust in God, my boys, and keep your powder dry!" This line from the poem "Oliver's Advice" by Valentine Blacker (1778 - 1823) was published in Ballads of Ireland, ed. Edward Hayes (1856). The poem is a dramatic representation of Cromwell addressing his army during the invasion of Ireland...."

"Доверяй, но проверяй"

Ronald Reagan

"I wish for Bristol to be able to move forward in life with her same forgiving, gracious, optimistic spirit, but from henceforth she'll know to trust but verify."

Some lady (?)^&confuse

How about.............

"Love All - but Trust Few" William Shakespeare (1564-1616).

I have tried to follow the first part of this maxim - but La Commandante forbids it - as she doesn't trust me!;) johnnybach

In terms of people's general trust worthiness on duty at their professions (note that I myself hope to be in the military, then a lawyer, then a politician):

Trustworthy:
#1: My Mom
#2: Non-political position holding military
#3: Non-$$ oriented medical personnel
#4: Scientists- those who have the guts to be true to their research
#5: Good teachers and professors who believe in what they are doing
#6: Historians who are true to themselves
#7: Philosophers and good writers, true artists, clergy who do it to help others

Untrustworthy:
#1: My Mom working in a chocolate factory
#2: Cut-throat businessmen and lobbyists/ Wall street/ the whole bunch of 'em
#3: Politicians
#4: The news
#5: Clergy of any kind who do it for the wrong reasons
