Thanks, I am not entirely sure if the colours are exactly right for the period, I am in no way expert on such matters and am constantly learning. I suppose I have been influenced by the westerns and images I grew up seeing - i know (or at least heard) that the yellow Kneckerchief was a hollywood invention. I am very much in awe of collectors who follow uniforms/detailing to its total historical accuracy.

Thank you for that....I like the Hollywood version...more colorful....but I suppose if you was really keen on the right colors...though...much less appealing..Scott has given some good advice on source ...cheers TomB.....Thanks, I am not entirely sure if the colours are exactly right for the period, I am in no way expert on such matters and am constantly learning. Scott...I really admire Remington's work.....I remember searching the net a few yrs ago and did not achieve much,,,do you have a good site reference ?...TomB
What is great about the internet is that we are not as poor for reference works as we were when I was a kid in the 1960s starting to paint. Any internet search of a uniform can yield dozens of hits. One problem of internet searching is the range of color values between photos and painted art and how they are reproduced for internet viewing. You can see photos of the actual uniforms but faded from use, photos that have aged and faded, reenactor uniforms from a good or poor dye lot, or period paintings reproduced too dark or too light.
The western cavalry look can be seen in Frederick Remington paintings and do occasionally show neckerchiefs , just not all the troops in uniform yellow ones. I just looked at a few on-line Remington paintings and if you copy the color values of the shades of blue, you won't be too far off.
"A Cavalryman's Breakfast on the Plains" has pretty good colors for western US cavalry from the Indian wars.
I really like to see the work of folks who can paint their own figures. Thank you for posting yours.
