I have been a 'Bonanza' fan since it came on the air in 1960, but never, until today, knew what the given name of the chracter Hoss was. While watching episode 16, 'El Toro Grande', from season 1, Hoss introduces himself as Eric. Only time I have ever heard this name in 52 years. Eric Cartwright. I can now live the rest of my life in bliss.^&grin -- Al

His mom was Swedish and also gave him the nic-name of Hoss which meant a "big friendly man" or so I remember. Ben must have been the kiss of death to go through three wives but all those local widders and spinsters were still after him.

Ben and the boys blew though a lot of women in all those years. Even Hop-Sing got a girlfriend in one episode.

"Bonanza" The Lonely Man (1972)

"In a rare episode with Hop Sing in the spotlight, the Cartwright's servant is panning for gold during a vacation when he falls in love with a white woman. The relationship blossoms into an engagement, but the marriage never takes place. Ben bears the heartbreaking news that a judge confirms: Territorial law forbids interracial marriage. "

Like most shows, I find that the early years/episodes tend to be a shows best. Never cared much for Bonanza once Adam/Pernell Roberts left. One example of Bonanza decline in quality was that ridiculous episode where Hoss donned an Easter Bunny outfit for most of the show. It kind of lost me after that. The early shows had a harder edge to them. -- Al

Did you know there is lyrics to the Bonanza theme song. Heard/saw it on TV long ago.

I knew there were but I sure don't remember them. Sort of like I know there are words to the 'Combat' theme music, but I can't remember them, either. -- Al

I believe this is now known as 'jumping the shark'', after the episode of Happy Days where Fonzi did just that....

^&grin^&grin^&grin One could say that Bonanza was ahead of it's time. They 'jumped the shark' before the phrase was coined.{eek3} -- Al
