I just received two recent offerings from the Firefly Collection produced by the Oliver Publishing Group out of Australia.
First is "Comrade Emcha, Red Army Shermans of WW2", by Claude Gillono - an illustrated look at the M4A2 tanks used by the USSR. America supplied just over four thousand Sherman tanks to the USSR during the war, all M4A2 models with diesel engines. About half had 75mm guns and about half had the later 76mm guns. Their use was downplayed during the Soviet era and it has been hard to find good combat views of them in action. Gillono's book has about 50 period photos and 5 pages of color illustrations showing markings. Definitely a good book for either the Sherman fan or someone looking for information on the tanks used on the Eastern Front.
The second volume is "Westwall, German Armour in the West, 1945", by Dennis Oliver. Again a slim book that contains about 50 period photos of the German armor that faced the Western Allies in 1945. Some of the photos are common but some are fresh, all with good captions. There are also 6 pages of color illustrations of camouflage and markings.
Both of these volumes are recommended. "Toy soldier" collectors will find them interesting as the color illustration show some possibilities for both German and Soviet subjects. Unfortuantely these are not as widely distributed as publications like Squadron, but they can be found at online bookstores and hobby shops. I bought mine from Aberdeen Bookstore in Colorado.
