Just bought a mint Brown Bess (original), will cost 2400.00, think this will really slow me down in my toy soldier hobby. Only good news is he will take 200.00 per month and let me have it till its paid off. I've always wanted one!!
Thought it will compliment my K and C. I bought it over the soldiers because they will be around for a while was just waiting on the new ones have the rest.

Cheers

PS already have a french pistol from the napoleon age..same one the dragoon figures are holding in K and C

Wow a mint Brown Bess where did you manage to find that? I haven't seen one of those since my high school days.
Do you know any of its history? A lot of them were brought over by the British and traded to the indians.
Good luck with it! I think you made a good choice!

I was about to ask the same thing. Whatever it is, cheap it's not.

The Brown Bess is the nick name of the British Land service Flintlock Musket the British used to great effect during our War for Independance and the French and Indian wars and of course the Penninsular Campaign against the forces of France. Saw service from 1730 to 1815. There are 5 different types:
Long Land musket 46 inch barrel, the Short Land with a 42 inch barrel
The Marine and Militia patterns which were variations of the Short land pattern and the India pattern and the New Land Pattern which was built 1802-1815. They were all in the same calibre .75
They were used throughout the Empire untill well into the 19th Century.

Do you know when yours was made and which pattern it is? I almost bought a nice one in Limerick Ireland back in 93 but thought the price was a bit too high at 850 pounds.

LOL...You guys are to funny if I had enough money I'd buy the Brown Bess and have a brown terry on the side. The Bess was mostly used by all british armies during the napoeonion, american revolution and war of 1812. Propbably the most internation used gun in the history of man kind!! Its mint the only issue is its a militia model made by Ramsey Sutherland London...maybe 1808..never dates on these but ita the india patern 3rd model!! It has a bayonet as well looks sweet altogether beside my K and C collection. I forgot the americans did have use of the, yhe design was copied by many nations was the most suited for there tactics at that time.

ps not sure if I will keep it not big on the militia I know the militia in the us and Canada was big thing but in England the regulars fought napoleon while the militia remained in England to protect their home land. Does anyone else with any authority agree with this or do they have better info on the subject matter.

Cheers

I am very jealous. I would love to own a Brown Bess but cannot afford it at this time. When I was growing up I had a French Charleville reproduction musket that was a lot of fun. Got to march down 5th Ave, NYC with it and fire it in a parade. Still to own a real musket from the time era of the American Revolution through the Napoleonic Wars would be a real find.

:( Just think what it must have been like to do a full days march with that heavy beast.
