Wanted to share this question with the rest of the Napoleonics community. I have become quite confused as to the proper color of trouser stripes worn by the British Union Cavalry Brigade at Waterloo. Browsing many images of the Royal Dragoons, Scots Greys, and Inniskillings I have noted some pictured in Blue, Red, and Yellow. Blue seems to be a popular choice among currently available Toy Soldiers on the market, but is this accurate? I am confused.

William Carmen, who was the Deputy Director of the National Army Museum and can therefore be recognised as a reliable authority, said that the overall stripes were generally red with the exception of the Scots Greys who had blue. Some of the officers had a plain gold or silver stripe according to the lace of the regiment. The overalls of the Scots Greys had a blue welt either side of the buttons down the sides. The yellow stripe shown by some artists from the Victorian period most likely reflect the stripes that were being worn at the time the painting was executed, the artist no doubt thinking such details wouldn't have changed.

That sounds like a very reliable source to me. Thanks for the feedback. I am investing in some new figures these days and want to make sure the details are fairly correct. :)

Cheers,

Glad to be of help. Recommend both Tradition and ATS, both companies go to great lengths with their research to make sure the figures are as accurate as possible, and both have extensive Napoleonic ranges.

Agreed on both accounts, and have been especially impressed with Nik at ATS and his patience with my micro managing and laundry list making.

Also waiting on a "cavalry parcel" from LL as we speak and have always liked Mike's things.

I'll be putting the results of this little query to good use as you will see in the future.

Regards,
MD
