Recently found these unusual photographs. Couldn't work out what they were at first, infantry manning guns? Volunteer unit? Obscure colonial regiment? It turns out that in 1865 the 20th regiment, later 1st Btn Lancashire Fusiliers, raised and equipped a complete half battery of artillery manned by 2 officers, 3 sergeants, 3 corporals, a bugler and 36 privates. The guns were 2 nine pounders and a 24 pounder howitzer. An incident unique in the British infantry.
