Hello everyone,

I'm attempting to identify the following soldiers. I know the drum corps are zouaves, but does anyone recognize the make? And with respect to the mounted Egyptian (I think?), does anyone know anything further - make, regiment? Any help is appreciated?

Welcome to the forum. Don't know about the drummers but the camel rider is Gordon of Khartoum from Somerset Ltd. run by Ron Ley. -- Al

Welcome to the forum!

Are the drummers hollow or solid? Are there any markings under the bases?

Prost!

I'll have a look in O'Brien's books and see if I can find them. I've got a couple other books, too, that I can check, Andrew Rose's, for example.

This is an interesting puzzle. My thoughts initially were towards a new maker (last 25 years) someone like Ron Wall or Garibaldi or maybe even repainted nostalgia figures. But if they are hollow cast I am really unsure of where to go to look. I'd also say zouaves is the likely unit. I will dig around in my references as well and see what I can find.

Hi There I thought of Edmunds as well but they don't seem detailed enough I am sure the Baron with work it out he is a pretty good detective when it comes too these puzzles.

They could be American Civil War Zouaves, but I am sure that they are not from Edmund's.

Well, so far, I haven't found anything like these drummers in my references, but I'm still looking. I think we can rule out some makers, though. For example, I don't think they're Britains, or Johillco, or from the other British hollowcast makers. I can't find any reference to any of them making drummers like these, whether these are Zouaves or Foreign Legion. So, we keep looking.

Indeed, perhaps. The képis had me thinking Foreign Legion/North Africa but I'm beginning to think they may be Civil War. The moveable arm has me stumped as well. No way they're Mignot. Beginning to think they may be older than I thought.

And they're definitely hollow-cast, correct? They feel light for their size? Do they have the telltale hole that hollow castings often do, where the excess molten metal was tipped back out of the mold a second after pouring?

Hi Guys,

I would like to see some more photos of them from other angles as well as the bases. But before you post them I had a thought today that they might well be from a recent maker, Glebe, however this is a total guess because I have only a few photos of Glebe products and don't have any catalogue info. Glebe does make a more of a toy like figure and the glossy style reminds me of them but as I mentioned this is a total wild*ss guess on my part. Brad what do you think?

Dave

Second that, Dave, if we could see some additional photos, it will definitely help. As it is now, they just look like standard classic hollowcasts like Britains or Johillco, though they're neither of those. I think you're onto something with a newer maker.

Prost!
Brad
