Does any one know what the requirements are for being a tanker in the Army or driving something like a Stryker

You either operate a Stryker or don't operate a Stryker- "something like a Stryker" doesn't exist :D;)

To be a tanker in today's army, you are good if you can count to 5 by 5's. If you can count to 10 by one's, then you are on the fasttrack to Sergeant.

Strykers are infantry fighting vehicles similar to the Bradley (but not as powerful). I am sure there is a school out there that will teach you how to properly operate one.

The squid :D:D gave a great link- the article there is on target.

Richard

Let me take you over to the KMW plant in Germany and train you in a REAL TANK : LEOPARD II ! :D :D

Might as well drive the best - my son. ;)

Some people here would seem to have difficulty in counting up to 21, especially as seems evident, they are ashamed of their history. :D:D:D

This Squid, as Chris called me, it proud to be called one.

By-the-by, I have changed my forum ranking to my enlisted rank. (1) My parents were married; (2) I can count and read; (3) I know my butt from a hole in the ground; and, (4) I am a human being - so I can't be an officer.:p;):)

HA!!! Hey man, you started it- I believe it was something like "We sailors collect Army girlfriends- something like that :))

I changed my rank to stay enlisted awhile back.

Carlos- yeah, that 42 age requirement is real new- Congress passed the 62 to retire age and as long as you can get your 20 in, your set. I am even strongly considering going back to the Green side- at 35, with my prior service time, I could be looking at 30+ years when I roll out. I think it makes a lot of sense too- why throw out a guy when he is 55?? There are many soliders, sailors and airmen who have plenty of good years in front of them- just look at the civilian world- many 60+ people making very positive contributions.

The lastest is that they will take non-high school grads and also someone with what is called a "minor" criminal record. Sounds like the Viet Nam period to me. I had a friend who was a recruiter in 1968 and he told me that if they would walk they were in, and if they could not walk, they were in anyway. Sounds like this war is degrading our all volunteer military, sadly.

Probably true to some regards. While I am strongly oppossed to filling the ranks of the military with social misfits so that the military will "Grow them up". I do believe the military can do wonders for people with discipline or self esteem issues. It gives the soldier a chance to prove himself among his peers and the soldier is taught how to take pride in themselves. The difference though is how they get there- if a soldier is court ordered to the military, then he probably doesn't want to change. If the soldier goes into the military looking to change, he will probably shine and find a home.

DoA also loosened the restrictions on SF schools as well- you can now ENLIST with that option. It used to be you needed to be a Sgt (or Sgt promotable) with a few years of experience behind you. I believe this option wasn't available to new recruits since Viet Nam as well.
