I wonder if any of my USA Friends could please give me some advice.Myself and my better half would very much like to return to Florida next year,we would rather not go when the schoolkids are on holiday. Can anyone tell me if the schools have holidays in May at all?.Would much appreciate any info you could give. Thanks

Rob:)

If you wish to avoid pesky children my advise would be VEGAS ! My personal favorite for a relaxing vacation :)

We did have a great visit to Vegas a while back, and i agree with you its a brilliant place. But we are at heart about 10yrs old so its back to the theme parks!:)

Hey Rob-

the biggest holiday in May is Memorial Day weekend. My children get the monday off to observe the holiday. It is typically the last weekend in May.

Might I suggest Hershey Park here in Hershey Pa?? You could make a day of it, spend a bit less than you would at Disney, and then go visit the Gettysburg battlefields and toy soldier shop in Gettysburg :D

Just my 2 cents- best of luck.

Hi Chris,

Thanks very much for your reply,i appreciate it.I love the idea of Hershey HQ!and as for Gettysburg well its a lifelong wish to go there, but my darling wife may be less inclined. However i'll put your suggestion to her,if you never hear of me again you know what happened!:D

Thanks again

Rob

Yes, but if you do Hershey park, you can also do Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey, and then visit New York City with (for her) shopping and (for you) Larry's collection, Mark Hoffman's collection, Brad's collection and my collection.

Well when you put it like that Louis, its a no brainer!:D After all when you've seen one Mickey mouse you've seen them all.Its a masterstroke, lure her to NY with the promise of endless handbags and shoes, and then use the immortal phrase...'Darling while we are here'....:)

She'll be so busy spending your money, you won't have to say anything, she won't even notice you disappear as long as you leave her the credit cards . . .

Yes thats the plan, can't be as risky as leaving them with a Mr T Neville!:D

Well, I certainly hope we will here from you again :D If she is a fan of chocolate perhaps Hershey World would suite her. It is a small, theme based event centered around how they make Hershey chocolate. At the end, you get freebies!! Plus, the event is free as well.

If you do get to go to Gettysburg, they have a pretty decent outlet mall an exit or two away from the battlefields. Another interesting spot to check out is President Eisenhower's retirement home (sounds weird huh). He retired in Gettysburg after his Presidency and his retirement house is still open for display.

Wherever you may roam, I wish you a safe and happy time!!

On the same note, is Miami OK to go to (rumour is it is dangerous?) and when do yet get the best weather and no hurricanes in winter - would Xmas/New Year be OK?

Not that anyone is interested but come to the UK anytime, it rains all year......

Kevin,
I live in Miami and it is very nice. Gets a little hot and muggy at this time of the year. The news says we are in for a big hurricane season with 17 named storms but they said the same thing last year and we had nothing? The news stations down here are supported by Publix and Home Depot at this time of year and as soon as they see any little disturbance the news never lets go of the story. Really bad TV in my opinion.

My favorite time of year is October through January. Super nice weather!

Let me know if you stop by and I will pay you a visit.

I was in Miami last year for a conference and like a numbskull, I didn't know about Bill's store until I got back into Toy Soldiers earlier this year. Rob- from what I can tell and what I have heard, Bill has a shop far superior to anything in Gettysburg. Plus, South Beach offers a lot more exciting, though probably not as historically significant, sites!! :D

Had one heck of an eye opener last year- a group of us went down and ate there on south beach. Really nice location, cool, gentle breeze coming in off the gulf. HOWEVER- the bill!!!!:eek: Nothing beats paying $45 for an appetizer of 6 jumbo shrimp!!! My firm covered the bill, which was $500+ but you still feel guilty about that (I can just imagine what the partners ran up!!)

Bill

That would be great, we haven't decided yet but I owe a few favours and we have watched CSI!!!!!! Thanks for letting us know that it is a good time for weather.

Hey , what is wrong with the left coast ? I mean west coast.:p

I have been to the West coast but only once just after Mt St Helena blew - 1980? Got some great sunset pics. Golden Gate still foggy. Managed to get to Monterey during the festival but no ticket!

If you go to Florida, your stuck in Florida and everything is quite a distance to the next tourist spot.

My suggestion to base yourself in:

WEST COAST...LAX
and here's what you get:
1.The Original Disneyland (smaller version of Disney World...less walking)
2.Universal Studio in Hollywood(orignal lot, bigger & better than FL)
3. MGM Studio
4. ...1.5 hrs from LAX is San Diego's Sea World
5. U.S. Naval Base Tour (San Diego). Their Museum is great... specially the model displays of 1/48 scale warships including
aircraft carriers with planes
6. 5.5 hrs to Las Vegas and additional 2 hrs to the Grand Canyon (the new area opened up with a glass walk overlooking the
Colorado River)

...and many more. In short everything is a driving distance if you base in LAX.
BTW, while in San Diego, you could visit TSSD (Toy Soldier of San Diego)
P.S. I am not from the Left Coast...er I mean West Coast. I am from Peoria, Arizona so you see I am not biased. Based on my vacation experiences, you get a lot more for your money if in LAX
