I ask this out of ignorance. SO please bear with me.
My understanding of the modern USMC is that it is an entirely self contained force in the sense that it has it's own Aircraft, artillery and armor. Is this correct? The USMC also has recon commandos. Are these a special forces type part of the USMC ?
Does the USMC have airborne capacity?
Thanks in advance.

Yes,the USMC is one of the most self-contained outfits around. As far as "airborne" - do you mean; can they insert groups via parachute - yes; can they conduct massed WW2 style air drops - no. The Corps did pioneer "vertical envelopment" where a large unit can be lifted into place via helicopters.

One thing the USMC does not have - its own medics. The USMC relies on the US Navy to provide its medical personnel.

Thanks Gary
I meant does the USMC have a major parachute deployment capacity?
It is interesting that they do not have their own Medics.

The Marines have RECON MARINES, which are every bit as good or better trained, than any other so called "special forces units". This is an entirely volunteer force, and has higher qualification standards than the other units of the marine corps, which is hard to believe in itself. The only thing they don't have is thier own song, which is just fine with them--and is a slam to the Green Berets. Thier song is the Marine Hymm, just like all other Marines.

As far as huge paratroop operations, this does not fit into thier battle plans or TO. They are marines of the sea, and there are not alot of plans drawn up for that. They figure they can go or get anyplace, at anytime they want too, and large helicopter forces can put people in safer than jumping into the night, scattering all over the place................Stryker
