I'm trying to wrap my head around how a US destroyer can run into a cargo ship. I haven't seen any reporting on what exactly happened. These weren't two small tugboats colliding!!

Prayers go out to the families of those killed in the accident...as well as those recovering from their injuries.

Right there with you. How does any vessel get that close to a navy ship? What if it were a bomb boat meant to take out the navy ship???? I think some heads will roll over this one.

with all the sophisticated navigational systems that these vessels have...
this is hard to fathom in this day and age...

I may be wrong...
but I think the story was...
that the destroyer was berthed...
and the cargo ship ran into it...

the destroyer almost sunk after this...

Ugly and tragic accident and I also am puzzled over how any ship gets so close to a US Naval vessel in this day and age. I think the Captain is going to be looking elsewhere for a job. -- Al

really...

I can almost hear the Captain ordering the vessel to not come any closer or they will fire on them...
you would think there is a standard procedure to address possible terrorist's attacks in place...

There has to be SOP's in place, especially since the USS Cole attack. I would think there is some sort of 'no cross dead line' zone that violation of would draw fire. I mean, these are US Navy ships we're talking about, not the SS Minnow. Someone will answer for this whole episode, and the lost lives. -- Al

Three other sailors were evacuated for their injuries. Among their number is the destroyer's commanding officer, Cmdr. Bryce Benson, who was transferred to the hospital in Yokosuka "and is reportedly in stable condition."

Very sad about the loss of life.

I have been at the helm of a US Navy ship many times when we were on a collision course with a container ship. They often will not alter their course even when the other ship has the right-of-way.

It is best to swallow your pride and alter course, but some wait too long, waiting for the give-way ship to take action.

Both Captains could have prevented this.
