Hi all,

I want to pick up my paint brushes and work on some small dio stuff from verlinden in the resin catagory but I need to know should or do I need some type of applicator/ under coat before I start with the main paints?? Speaking of paints I use Tamiya paints is there a different paint I should use??...Sammy

Hi, Sammy,

Priming is a good idea, regardless of resin, styrene or metal. I use the same prep for all three materials.

  1. Wash the figures in warm water and a de-greasing agent, to remove mold release compounds and other schmutz. Many guys use dishwashing liquid. I have settled on using SuperClean, an automotive de-greaser. I just add a little bit to the water, and it leaves the figure's surface literally squeaky-clean. Allow the figure or unassembled kit to dry. Air-drying is sufficient, but could lay the pieces on a piece of paper towel or a cloth, to help wick away moisture
  2. Prime the kit with your primer of choice. You may need to assemble the kit first, if necessary, or prime parts separately before painting and attaching them later. The primer, as you probably know, provides a better surface for your top coats to adhere to. You can also influence the top colors, by your choice of primer color. If you're painting a white uniform, for example, you might use a very light gray or a white primer, and the coats you overlay will have a lighter cast. Same goes for reds and yellows. Conversely, a dark primer will make the top coats appear darker. This effect is especially noticeable when using acrylics to build up thin layers of color, not so noticeable on toy soldiers painted with gloss enamels.
  3. Apply your finish coats

That's pretty much the process I use on a scale model, too. Clean-prime-paint.

Now, with regard to resin kits, I pin the joints on mine, out of habit, but I've been told that it's not really necessary on 54mm resin figures, or smaller. You may decide your preference.

Hope that helps!
Brad
