I have become with time a great admirer of Stadden and his creativity........pitty I joined the game too late to see Charles ( the elder ) at the prime of his art.....
With time I was introduced to his work, a great sculptor and creator of Napoleonic and Victorian armies.....

Stadden made terrific figures! I love the paint jobs on yours, both matt and glossy. I have a few of the 90mm factory-painted matt figures Chas. Stadden used to produce, including an amazing Holmes and Watson.

John (Obee),

Between you and the other painter named John (Firth) on the forum, the standard of figure painting is impossibly high!

Thanks for your kind comments Louis :)

We both have to upkeep the fine standards on the Forum, and the Empire :)

By the way, on my last visit to UK I spent an very enjoyable morning with John and his wife at his home near Newark, where we compared notes ( painting techniques), I inspected his troops and if I get that far north on next year's European trip I hope pay a return visit.

John

Hi John,

Thanks to you and your miraculous lick of paint....all these Stadden troops got a renewed lease of life!.....I bet Charles Stadden never imagined that his troops would be reformed/amalgamate in Australia and then deployed in Brazil.......{sm4}{sm4}....
Waiting transport instructions are two full Regiments, one RIF and one Blackwatch........:salute:::salute:::salute::
Thanks John....
:salute:::salute::

I didn't realise that I'd been so busy with 'a lick of paint' :) :)

John

All those glossy are good to see, but it's complety opposed to what C Stadden, Imrie-Risley, Pat Bird, Hinton Hunt, Tassel, Rose etc ... intended to do .
All those production " paint it yourself" were far more detailled and made for the collectors to paint them more life like ( matt painting )
People requested those new figures opposed to the glossy, simple, lacking details ones, this was the evolution of the figures made for adult collectors and not children anymore .
One of he result you could see in those photos; painted matt with oils, shadows, highlights .
Those sculptors didn't make "Toy Soldiers" anymore but evolved in a new world

Hi Mirof,
Thanks to the note....
I guess I am giving a new twist to the " status quo " I love the details that Stadden, Rose, Lasset etc gave to the sets, a fantastic change from the goffy Britains hollow cast toy like soldiers and with greater historical accuracy than the compteting Trophy etc....These Stadden really carried the details to the last ammo pouch and jacket details and I love that...reason why I gave up on Trophy and the like... but still prefer the colourfull gloss touch...the sets stands out better...
The matts you see in the collection are original 40 year plus painted sets that came to me in the mint condition that you can see and I kept them so....Personally I do not like the shadows ....the ' Soldier does not seem right ^&cool:cool:"
The matt style I like the best is the one used in the new Britains sets that are coming out...that is nice as well as the JJD ones......

Hi Mirof,
Thanks a lot for the info on a book that covers the C Stadden series.....As I thought, he was a big fan of Naps.....what a fertile imagination the gentleman had.....Pitty that has been somewhat lost in today´s mass market....
I still keep an eye for the Victorian armies he so well depicted in his series....they are just great..
Cheers
Luiz

Here a book/catalogue published by Tradition of London about the figures of C Stadden that were available at the time
