Reading the book by Jeremy Paxman The Victorians. Paxman does a good job in providing context in which these ptgs were produced. He correctly points out that Victorian ptgs encompass numerous sub themes such as pre Raphaelites, romantics, military ptgs etc Against the glittery backdrop of the more well known ptgs, there was the grim reality of soot ridden cities and extreme wretchedness in ptgs which were not so well known as they were not considered to be art. The coverage is really broad , mostly on ptgs which informed the whole of Victorian society. There was only scant coverage on military ptgs with the main focus being on Lady Butler and a singular mention of Richard Caton Woodville. Surprisingly, I didn’t come across the use of the term genre in this book.
