The companion volume to the Ken Burns series came out last week and has received less than a sterling review, https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/14/...eview&nl_art=&nlid=39918670&ref=headline&te=1, although it apparently has some positives.
The reviewer thought the companion book to the series made in the 1980s, Stanley Karnow's Vietnam: A History, was superior. One thing Karnow had going for him that Ward does not is that Karnow had been a journalist in Vietnam and knew many of the players.
