Hi

I am thinking of buying one, i know the sail is a different colour and the shields are different, but are there any other differences between the two excellent ships?

Barkmann, I don’t have both ships (getting just the first version was perfect for me) but from the pics I’ve seen of the second version, it seems identical to the first longship apart from the sail color and shield markings you noted. The figures look the same with the same tooling, poses, and paintwork as the first longship.

Assuming you may not have one already, John’s Viking longship model is really fantastic and was well worth the purchase. Mine has been a centerpiece display in my living room since I got it in May 2022 😎

Thanks for the answer, i am thinking about buying one, i have over 110 Saxons and Vikings from the range, but fancy a Longship, there are a couple of dealers that have them and i was thinking of contacting them to see how much they are?

Nice set up you have, i saw this BBC show a while ago, the era interests me as i come from what was the 'Border area' between the Viking and Anglo/Saxon settlements and many of the place names are Viking in origin.

Glad I could help, Barkmann! Although I’m an American, I have great grandparents on my mother’s side that were of Norwegian ancestry and on my dad’s side I have great grandparents who were English (actually still have some distant relatives living in the Buckinghamshire area of England!) In that sense, I’ve got cultural connections to both the Vikings and the Anglo-Saxons, among other Western European cultures. While I’ve not gotten too far into John’s Saxon/Viking range, more out of cost and space concerns as opposed to interest in the era, I nevertheless could not pass up the Viking Longship (basically a collection unto itself) due to the cultural connections noted above, and so have it displayed proudly as a centerpiece to my toy soldier collection 😎

Cheers, these things remind us all we are related in one way or another, pity there are too many people that concentrate on the differences rather than what makes us the same. I've probably got a few relatives in the US, as according to my Grandmother we were related to some of the very earlier settlers, as the family came from North Nottinghamshire, right in the middle of where some of the early pilgrims came from! While the family also has a link to the Jacobites, as 2 were killed in farmstead raids by the Scots as they retreated back from Derby. I do collect the Jacobite range.

I agree the Ship is a masterpiece on its own, i have been looking at one and getting a modelmaker friend to make a water base, would probably go for one with a river bank down on side, as if they sailing up a river etc. I have a large Saxon Shield Wall and quite a number of Viking, picked up three new Saxons from Evilbay last week, not a bad price, £78 for a 3 set. Hard series to make anything other than figures, but i would like to see a village raiding scene [know Conte did one] and for that there are numerous possibilities. Have a few JG trees and a Eagle Design Wagon behind my shield wall, but I am always looking for any 3D building, fencing etc. Recently got a decent book, see below,

Hi- the JJD longboat is a beauty and I have it in my office on display. I was worth every penny and better than the long retired Conte version I have in my collection (although I am still fond of it as it was one of my first big toy soldier purchases imported from the States). I have most of the JJD Normans and Saxons but less Vikings as I have a lot of William Britain and Conte figures.

I also have the Conte Saxon village play set which has some useful buildings.

I will add some shots from some time back as I have not managed to take many photo's since returning to the UK from Tasmania.
