As I said I would post up some shots of the Viking raid at around 1000 A.D. The four kingdoms of Britain (Wessex, Mercia, East Anglia and Northumberland) had at last been united under Saxon and sometimes Viking rule. However, the Dark Ages brought a violent end to many kings and at times the country was weakly ruled. The stone building of the past had long gone with the departure of the Romans. Wood and mud were the order of the day as the wet damp climate made for stinking, rotting mud and thatch settlements. The Saxons had defeated the Vikings by building burghs (or wooden palisade defencive walls) around important towns. The Vikings being no good at siege warfare.
The Norseman still looked with envious eyes at the riches Britain still had to offer with rich pickings from churches and rape and slavery for young women they could catch. With their bloodlust up these Viking raiders have moved inland to attack a local theigns (or earl) castle. Which is of course a wooden structure. I suspect they have bitten off more than they can chew!
Enjoy
