I am thinking, that maybe i will visit USA soon (in a few months...) for the first time. So i need some tips, advise,....like i am thinking to drive on famous route 66, so what is better:
-to rent a car in USA (cabrio will be great!!!!)
or
-to buy a car in Chicago and than sale it in San Diego ( i just do not know if i can buy a car, because i am an tourist....)?

Which option is cheaper an dbetter for a traveler?

Than i will like to know if i drive on the Route 66, where is good to stop by, to sleep, to rest, what i need to see, visit?
Is this route dangereous?
Is there any danger to sleep in a road Motel in the middle of nowhere haha?
What are the temperature acros the desert?
How long this trip takes?

I am sure later i will have more questions, but for the first time i think there is enough questions about this Route 66, so please some help!

Hello Ales, I envy you your trip. First of all, while it is possible to buy a car in Chicago and sell it in California it is very inconvienent to resell it and I don't recommend it. If you have money you can buy a car, the fact that you are a tourist doesn't matter, but in addition to the car you have to get a license plate, register the car and buy insurance. You would also be taking a chance if you buy a used car. If you buy a cheap one than you have to worry about reliability and possible repair costs. I think you don't want to take a chance on your car breaking down in the Mojave Desert where the temperature can get up to 120 F / 49 C. When you arrive on the West coast you have to go through the hassle of selling the car. It is a problem if you have to sell in a hurry because a dealer won't offer a good price and a private buyer takes a while to find. You should rent a car. As far as how long the journey takes, it is possible to drive to the West Coast from Illinois in three days if you stay on the Interstate and spend really long days in the car. But I think that you want to plan on at least five days to a week so you can take your time and enjoy things. You probably know that the historic road is decommisioned as the modern interstate highway is a faster road. You can drive along the old road for much of the way. You will want to take a detour to see the Grand Canyon, and perhaps Las Vegas.

I really recommend that you do a lot of research before you go, and you can find out a lot of information on the internet. I wouldn't worry to much about crime, as long as you stay out of the bad parts of major cities and don't go looking for trouble you should be okay. Enjoy yourself.

There are detailed Route 66 route guides on the internet which show all the historic places on Route 66, what parts have been bypassed by the Interstate Highway but still can be driven. It's a popular holiday trip. http://www.historic66.com/

We got married in 1967, in Las Vegas and then drove in our 1959 Chevy on Route 66 as far as Oklahoma before continuing on to Washington, D.C. Back in those days, we had to take Route 66 because the Interstate Highway system was still being built back then and we really didn't have any other choice. We have subsequently taken several family vacations to National Parks near Route 66 including the Grand Canyon, Bryce, Zion, Mesa Verde, Chaco Canyon, the Petrified Forest, and Meteor Crater. You might want to consider visiting some of them. The Automobile Club, among others, has guide books on Route 66.

I would not buy a car in Chicago and then try to sell it in California. For one thing, California has different emission standards than many other states do and you may not be able to sell it here. Besides, you can get very reasonable rental car rates in the U.S. (much cheaper than Europe). I wouldn't be too concerned about crime; if someplace doesn't look or feel right to you, avoid it. However, don't ever stay at the Bates Motel!

Hey, thank you all for the very valuable informations.
