Never known a day like today as all flights in and out of the UK have been suspended as ash from a volcanic eruption in Iceland moves south.

National Air Traffic Services have decreed no flights would be allowed in or out of UK airspace until 1800BST amid fears of engine damage. As well as the UK Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark were among the European countries hit.

Bad isn't it,they are now saying all flights may not resume until tommorow.

Now why couldn't this have happened during the Blitz?:rolleyes:That's like something my gran would say?!:eek:Not trying to offend anyone here, just a crack at humor!:)

You should have seen it here in Washington State the day after one of the bigger eruptions in Alaska. The Ash caused a massive change in the weather here it went from sunny and low 80s to overcast and 50s in a few hours. The funny thing was all the greenies here saying that gloabal warming was to blame when they could have watched the news and seen the eruption was the culprit. Needless to say I had a great time laughing at them with the whole sky is falling routine...

The ash from these eruptions is worse on Aircraft engines than the sand in the desert winds. Better safe on the ground than crashed and burned right.

My brother and is family just beat it,they flew in from New York just yesterday.I agree with Dave, better delayed on the ground than dead on the ground.A guy from Scotland was moaning at an airport on tv this morning,I was thinking Jeez, its done for your safety mate, your alive and well arn't you,you can always fly to god knows where another day!

Too right - I remember the BA 747 flight that flew in to a volcanic ash cloud; the captain announced...

"Ladies and Gentlemen, this is your Captain speaking. We have a small problem. All four engines have stopped. We are doing our ****edest to get them under control. I trust you are not in too much distress."

The full story is here, plus I remember a drama documentary on the incident - pretty scary stuff.
