I watch some of the episodes that were on PBS's Masterpiece Mystery last year, starring Kenneth Branagh and thought they were well done and well acted. Earlier this year, while browsing Netflix I saw that they had more episodes and started to watch them again. Really quite good. Branagh is just a tremendous actor.

Then, I noticed that Netflix had a series in Swedish called Mankell's Wallander; Henning Mankell is the author of the Inspector Wallander books, which I hadn't known about until I started to watch the episodes. The second Swedish version (there are two) stars Krister Henriksson and he is excellent, just as good, if not better, than Branagh.

Branagh plays Wallander as slightly rumpled, out of shape and possessed to solve a case whereas Henrikkson plays him differently, more urbane and idealistic, a bit set in his ways but a loner and definitely not rumpled. Both actors do a fantastic job although I prefer the Henrikkson version at this point, so much so that I've ordered one of the books.

Great series.

Sometimes, just for giggles, I will watch both the foreign and the U.S. version of a movie, that I might like and will be surprised in preferring the dubbed version better. Let Me In ( vampire girl/ human boy love affair ) U.S. much better than Swedish..Girl with Dragon Tattoo, ( almost mirror plot, line for line ), I enjoyed both..The Grudge, Japanese version better. The Returned ( folks return from dead to rural town ) the French version sooo much better than any U.S. effort. I enjoy Branagh's interpretation of Wallander, even if he plays him as depressing and not very likable. Michael
