Although Stephen Foster's classic Civil War song is about a Union soldier, its' sentiment of family loss was felt on both sides of the war. The young Southern Belle pictured below in the camp of the Virginia Militia shared with her Northern "sisters" the same worries and too often grief.

Was My Brother In The Battle?

-----Stephen Foster (1862)

Tell me, tell me, weary soldier from the rude and stirring wars,
Was my brother in the battle where you gained those noble scars?
He was ever brave and valiant, and I know he never fled.
Was his name among the wounded or numbered with the dead?
Was my brother in the battle when the tide of war ran high?
You would know him in a thousand by his dark and flashing eye.
Tell me. tell me, weary soldier, will he never come gain,
Did he suffer 'mid the wounded or die among the slain?
Was my brother in the battle when the noble Highland host
Were so wrongfully outnumbered on the Carolina coast?
Did he struggle for the Union 'mid the thunder and the rain,
Till he fell among the brave on a bleak Virginia plain?
Oh, I'm sure that he was dauntless and his courage ne'er would lag
While contending for the honor of our dear and cherished flag.
Was my brother in the battle when the flag of Erin came
To the rescue of our banner and protection of our fame,
While the fleet from off the waters poured out terror and dismay
Till the bold and erring foe fell like leaves on Autumn day?
When the bugle called to battle and the cannon deeply roared,
Oh! I wish I could have seen him draw his sharp and glittering sword.

Great photo, Randy.

Just having read the "complaints" in the Britains Matte forum about the focus on the Zulus, this photo reminds me of how much diversity and quality you and your photos bring to the Britains Gloss thread. Thank you for that.

Hi Mr Polarbear
I rearly look at the "glossy" section of the forum but having just read your new thread what a wonderful and interesting mixture of themes.

I have viewed your photos before but this one has had me thinking back to my childhood.

Question - where did you obtain the tent in the photo???

I have, since the age of 14 been very interested in the ACW. not just collecting W. Britain etc but all aspects of the conflict. There was a song during the 1960,s which was played on a regular basis on BBC radio. I remember the tune and some of the lyrics.

Waiting by the railroad tracks
one wore blue and one wore black
Knowing that he won't come back
There on a beautiful morning.

I know I'm asking the impossible but do you know it and if so who sang it ???

Tom Jones sang it

TWO BROTHERS

Two brothers on their way
Two brothers on their way
Two brothers on their way
One wore blue
And one wore grey

One wore blue and one wore grey
As they marched along the way
A fife and drum began to play
All on a beautiful morning

One was gentle, one was kind
One was gentle, one was kind
One came home, one stayed behind
A cannonball don't pay no mind

A cannonball don't pay no mind
Though you're gentle or you're kind
It don't think of the folks behind
All on a beautiful morning

Two girls waiting by the railroad track
Two girls waiting by the railroad track
For their darlings to come back
One wore blue, and one wore black

One wore blue, and one wore black
Waiting by the railroad track
For their darlings to come back
All on a beautiful morning

One wore blue, and one wore black
Waiting by the railroad track
For their darlings to come back
All on a beautiful morning

All on a beautiful morning

The tent is a retired piece from W. Britain's ACW series.
