I'll assume most who study Napoleonic history are familiar with the theory that Napoleon was murdered on St. Helena by arsenic poisoning. Most of my info is old, from the book 'The Murder of Napoleon' which attempted a scientific anaylsis and was quite convincing to me, athough who was part of this conspiracy was murky.

I wonder if that is still a widely held belief, or if new information has surfaced. What do you think about the theory ?

I can add only one tiny footnote. I was vaccationing in Puerto Rico with a friend who has relatives there. Their family history was interesting. They said they were decended from an Italian Doctor named Antomarchi, who had fled to the island to hide, because some thought (erroneously) he had poisoned Napoleon. I have not been able to verify it, but did find he died in Cuba.

Concur with Combat. There will always be some who believe he was murdered but the newest evidence suggest otherwise. Certainly would have been other ways to off the chap:eek:, after all they could have had him "fall off" a ship or something:D:eek:. Would have been a lot cheaper and easier than years of poison on St Helens.

That's more or less the end of that! The old theory had motive and the medium, but was a bit weak in who-dunnit. I think it said it was primarily Montethon (Probably not spelled right) in the pay of the French prince and heir to the throne.

Some of the people who went to St. Helena were a bit strange, in that they had not a long term connection to him. The old friends like Bertrand or aids like Roustan were logical, but people like Le Cases and Montethon volunteering to go is curious.

It was the BRITISH - I tell you - It was the BRITISH !! :D

Another high scale cover up !

It can't have been the British. Sir Hudson Lowe would never have allowed it in a million years. Besides, it had started up quite a bit of Napo-tourism business for St. Helena. Visit balmy St Helena and see the Great Ogre! :D

Lets just say it was us,it'll wind Ron up!:D:D

Rob

Now - Rob, don't make me go over the list of War Crimes that the British have committed throughout history .... ;):p:D

That should wind Rob UP !
