I was channel surfing last night and stumbled onto the last 30-minutes of this German made 1930 movie. It depicted trench warfare of WWI and appeared very realistic. The dirt, mud, grime, casualties, people losing their minds. It was quite good, like "All's Quiet on the Western Front".

I used to have a VHS tape of this movie but it wasn't a real good copy. I watched the TCM presentation last night and the picture was much better than my tape. It is a well-done movie that presents the trench fighting and battlefield much as one imagines the war to have actually been. One thing I did notice was the large emphasis on hand-grenades as opposed to rifles as the major close-quarter weapon of choice, which is correct to actual tactics. The machine-gun fire was non-stop and really formed the score to the film. I was also impressed by the chaos at the German aid-station. As Brad says, a classic film. -- Al
