One of the great movies about War is G.W. Pabst's Westfont 1918, released in 1930. Unfortunately, it was overshadowed by All Quiet on the Western Front.

It has recently been released on DVD by Criterion. Here's an article about the movie and other recently released war movies on DVD.

A superb movie, released the same year as AQotWF. I've only ever seen it as a subtitled movie. Don't think there is an English language version. -- Al

It is a superb movie. I, too, have only seen it in the German version.

Another great movie by Pabst is Comradeship or Kameradschaft about German miners who try to help save French miners trapped in an underground tunnel between the French and German border.

Saw that many years ago and was fascinated by it. Only have seen it one time and would love to see it again. -- Al
