I just want to know how sick I really am.....I spend on average a month $500.00, many times I feel guilty for spending this much. I'm new to the hobby and playing catch up for the past year, hopefully things will slow down for me....

That's certainly a large element of catch-up, but spare a thought for the WWII collectors: if a retired tank turns up each month they're $500 poorer for just one set!

Ouch.....I thought $500.00 was alot...I guess some guys may not want to admit on a public forum on average how much they spend...I know that my brother smokes about 5 packs of smokes a week which works out to about 160.00 to 200.00 a month, and my cousin plays golf and spends about 300-400 a month on his interrests.

WELLINGTON......

PS Not sure if this is too much of a personal question

I have been good this month and only bought the Santa Jeep, but when I first started to collect I had to play a little catch up and that was expensive.

So I,m not alone. I probably also spend $500 a month, but not just for K&C. I,ve got into other brands lately.
As I,ve told some others, when I first started collecting K&C back in 2002, all the now retired sets, except a few winter ws, were readily available from dealers. I sold a huge baseball and hockey card collection to fund my catch up. If it wasn't for those cards I would still be catching up.
I,m now selling off my old Marx figures to fund my catch up on Conte and ONTC WW2 figures.
If British Commando and Honor Bound proove out, I don,t know what I'll do, maybe sell a one of my kidneys!

Since I retired I only spend about $150.00 a month unless it is a toy soldier show- Detroit and Indiannopolis coming up so I will spend more there. I buy very little on K&C armor but buy the Iwo and Bulge Figure sets. I already made plenty of Tamiya tanks through the years so I am "armored out" for awhile. I guess I got early K&C guys from 1984 according to little plastic box- Highland Sgt. with walking stick- others in red and Khaki with flag sets by K&C in glossy paint plus early Frontline guys. World War l generals set was about their first set. Still end up with more guys every year. Leadmen

I refuse to answer that ? in fear of my wife someday seeing this and knowing how munch my little toy soldiers realy cost. :D I guess its better than a drug or alcohol addiction but definitly not cheaper. I try to shop around and barter to get the best deal possible and most of the time get some realy good deals but fall victim to a few that i think i won,t see cheaper and then the next week i do find it cheaper so of course i have to buy that one also (can,t pass up a deal). I collect mostly napoleonics from various manufacturers but also have other periods also.

Guess I'm a little lucky in a way because K&C Napoleonics are relatively new so I'm almost caught up, and, none were retired when I first started out. I really want to get some Delprado but can't afford it until I finish catching up. All I need to get is the last 4 Dragoon Calvary and my KGL and I'm there......:)

Cheers

I'm happy some people came clean so I don't feel like such a NUT!!!!

I started pretty much as you did Wellington, playing catch up. My problem was I bought into too many K&C series. First I tried purchasing old retired sets but found myself occasionally giving in to the temptations of new releases. The expense of the retired sets was a bit overwhelming and put a stop on that strategy. I now just purchase new sets or readily available ones but give priority to newly announced retirements. My monthly K&C budget varies but on average.....$500 sounds about right.

If you think I'm going to answer that question, I've got a bridge I can sell you ;) Your honor, the honorable Justice Andrew Neilson, I kindly take the fifth:D

I'm with Brad. My wife could be reading this over my shoulder, and while she has no cause to complain, there is no need to give her any excuse to start complaining. That being said, considering the present value of my collection, the mony spent on K&C over the last 12 years is probably the best investment I ever made.

I was starting to believe that I needed a twelve step program. After reading some of these posts I feel normal again. I'm in the 400.00 to 500.00 per month range. This was a bad month since I purchased a Conte Church, and a few other buildings on top of my usual figure spending.

As Louis stated, one thing about this hobby is that if you ever wanted out, you more than likely can get your money back and even make a profit.
In a way it,s challenging and fun trying to find ways to pay for these soldiers.
A guy I work with only hobby is going on 4 or 5 expensive trips each year. I would rather have my hobby where every day I can enjoy it and have something to show for all the money I spent.
Although to tell a non collecter I spend $500 a month on "toy" soldiers causes some odd looks on their part.

Guys, I can post a poll, which is a bit more anyonymous if you like.

Just keeping up with the new stuff costs me $500+ a month, not to mention the expense of grabbing up the odd Warbird or very old set I still need when it becomes available. If you are hard core about having everything K&C ever made, this hobby can be prohibitively expensive. I have probably spent as much if not more in the last 2 years to buy perhaps 10% of my K&C collection than I did in the earlier 10 years to buy 90% of my collection. On the other hand, when Andy recently discussed the value of my collection with me, his estimate was approximately three (3) times the appraisal he did of my collection about three years ago. With around 50 warbirds, one resin and metal vehicle and 20-30 of the old figures yet to collect, I am looking at tens of thousands of dollars on old stuff before I'm through, plus the $500 or so a month to keep up with the new stuff. Yikes!

Because I live in a very small apartment (even the most optimistic salesperson would just about manage "cosy" or "compact" with a straight face) I find that I regularly cull a diorama to make room for newer sets. This probably disguises the total spend for me, as some months it'd appear to be a self-financing hobby. Overall I'd probably estimate that about $5,000 or so would be needed for someone who started today trying to play catch-up, and that would be for a reasonable spread of current and retired items. After that then it could be anywhere from $25 to $250 per month, depending upon the release schedules of the various companies, including accessories and so forth.

Common Brad and a few others on here...who wears the pants in the family!!!!! You tell her how its going to be, you put your foot down!! Opps I have to go my wife is coming... talk to you later

Wellington,

I love your sense of humor and your point is very well made! My wife is very supportive of my hobby. Inviting her participation in hobby related financial decisions and keeping her informed helps me maintain realistic parameters on my spending. With her participation, I can fully enjoy my hobby without guilt lurking in the background.

Warm regards,

Pat
