You also need Ken Burns' American Civil War, the BBCs The First World War,
the mini series Anzacs, We Were Soldiers and A Hill in Korea, for a start.

You should add "The Train" and "The Thin Red Line"(1998), "Cross of Iron" and "Conspiracy" and do not forget "Pork Chop Hill". All essential and great films. -- lancer

Actually I was just talking about motion pictures, but if anyone can recommend any good docos that would be good too.

You also need Ken Burns' American Civil War,
Got it.

the BBCs The First World War,
Got it too.

the mini series Anzacs,
That's on my list.

We Were Soldiers
Worst movie ever.

and A Hill in Korea, for a start.
Tell me more about this one trooper. Sounds interesting.

Keep 'em coming boys!

Well we are talking personal choice of course since you obviously don't like some that others would recommend and there are some on your list that I would not want, as well as many I have and a few I still want.;) It also looks like you also already have some you would have to hide if Rob visited you.:D In any event I would certainly add the Duelists, Force 10 (the new Blueray edition), The 300 and King Authur for various reasons. It would be politic not to say they are terrible movies however, even if you don't want them as tastes do in fact vary and it is good to remember Allah's notion on diversity.;):D Happy viewing whatever you chose mate.

In any event I would certainly add the Duelists,
Yeah that's a definate possibility.
If that's Force 10 from Navarone, I guess I should get it.
I've thought about it.
and King Authur
I had such high hopes for this one but was disappointed.

May I say Spitfrnd you are right about some of the DVDs in my collection that probably need to be put down. :D

Perhaps not strictly in the film category but definitely a must have is the complete set of “Sharpe”.

Jeff

"Conspiracy" is an HBO production about the 1942 Wannsee meeting determining the "final solution". It is tremendously well written and acted. Fantastic cast headed by Ken Branagh as Heydrich, Stan Tucci as Eichmann, Colin Firth and a lot of other fine actors. It is not an "action" film but rather a scary,
thought-provoking study of Nazi thinking and politics. A very fine work. BTW, cannot agree with your assesment of TRL or COI. I consider them both to be really good war films. -- lancer

Actually that's one I've considered. Isn't he an officer in the British army during the Napoleonic Wars or something like that?

No worries mate. It's like Spitfrnd said. In the end it comes down to personal taste.

Sounds great. Thanks for the tip.

That’s right starts off as a newly promoted Lieutenant in the 95th Rifles and rises through he ranks to be a Lieutenant Colonel at the Battle of Waterloo. They are always being repeated over here on one of the digital channels due to their popularity, Sean Bean as Sharpe gets the ladies vote as well!

We all have those; according to my wife, I have more than you would ever imagine.;):D

FWIW, Authur was disappointing to me as well but it has several interesting scenes and is fun overall. It is not the Authur movie I would make but until that comes along.;)

Jeff, I love Sharpe, although the books, as usual, are better. My big problem is that the DVD versions I have rented have a really poor DVD transfer, so much so as to be distracting. The bigger the screen and sharper its resolution, the worse that actually looks.:( Is there some version where that is not the case?

That brings up another BBC favorite of mine, the mini series Piece of Cake, also based on a great book. The transfer in that one is rather poor as well but it has some great shots of flying SPITFIRES (yes I know they only had Hurricanes in the phony war) so I have it anyway. I have wondered though whether the BBC can make a DVD with decent video quality?

I used to watch the odd episode on Foxtel (Australian cable) a few years back. Are there ever any epic Napoleonic battle scenes?

Difficult to describe them as epic, they do try to have a story line based on one of the real battles, but there are usually only a few hundred extras at most, as they are made for TV. But if you like to see the French get their butts kicked by a few Riflemen then you can't go wrong! :D

Ha ha. Thanks Jeff. :D

I would also offer Mash and Stripes, they certainly resonate with my military experience.;):D Come to think of it so does Piece of Cake.

I used to watch M*A*S*H every afternoon at 4 o'clock after school and STRIPES was one of those movies I used to watch over and over again.

A very interesting collection - and certainly a broad definition of "war movie" from western to medieval knights. Hollywood is appreciative :D and the rest of us are merely envious.

I may have missed and you already have, but here a few suggestions:

Apocalypse Now - Redux (extended and "adult" version)

Legends of the Fall

Open Range

Predator (I aint go time to bleed!)

Tropic Thunder (we all need comic relief on occassion)

I thought Force 10 from Navarone was so horrible as to be unwatchable. Also to avoid: Breakheart Pass

Question: How often do you go back and watch any of these? I have found I rarely make the effort to re-watch a movie, no matter how much I enjoyed it. But that may just me be. That said, I still own over 50 DVDs

Not sure if any of these were on your list;

Stalingrad (1992 version, the 1958 version is beyond terrible)
Battleground
A Bridge too Far
The brotherhood of war
The Blue Max
The Winter War
