Finally able to land a copy of this long out of print book at a great price. I've heard that this is the premier book in photographs on the Waffen-SS. Anyone have a copy of this book? Is it what they say? Looking for new pictures of the Waffen-SS for diorama ideas.

It is a good one and at the time it was published, 1975, it was far and away the best on the market. It is still a premier work but since it's publication dozens of other photo works have been published on all aspects of the W-SS, weapons, units, uniforms, etc., that offer a still wider variety of pictures on the W-SS. Even so, When All the Brothers are Silent is still an indispensable work with what probably is still the most photos in any one publication. It is well worth your purchase, it is just that it is not the only option anymore. -- Al

Wow, this book is expensive! $1100 brand new. Used $200 to $500. Al (Lancer), if you're reading this, can you recommend a less costly book with lots of "action" pics. It doesn't have to be just SS. Regular German army is fine (soldiers/AFVs).

I can steer you in the right direction on where to find such books, but I have been out of the business too long to direct you to specific titles. There are a few publishers that really specialize in these type books.
RZM Imports - Remy Spezanno carries many such publications, including a 6 volume photo history of the W-SS at Kursk
J.J. Fedorowicz - publishes dozens of photo histories on German WW2 subjects under authors like Lehmann and Fischer
Schiffer - publishes many German WW2 related subjects
Heimdal - French publisher, many excellent photo histories of German units, many bilingual, many in French only, but lots of pictures. Authors like Bernage and Trang
Casemate - carries many Heimdal books and others, many different military subjects
You will find a wide variance in prices, especially amongst out of print titles. The Abebooks website is the best place to track down individual out-of-print titles. You can use title, author, key words, etc. Just entering a key word like Waffen SS or Leibstandarte or Arnhem, etc., will return hundreds of listings. Perhaps there are other members who are more involved in the subject that can help you. As I said earlier, I am just too out of touch with the hundreds of books published on the German military in the last 20 years. -- Al

Just received my copy of When all brothers are silent. This book first came to my attention back as a young teenager in the early 80's. I had a pretty good eye for collecting photographic World War 2 books about the German side of the war and was told this would be a good book to add to one's collection. That the photography was outstanding. I can remember going into my local bookstore to try and order this book. At the time it was about a 50 dollar book. The lady looked at me like I was nuts. Did I know what I was ordering she asked? I said I was aware of what type of book it was but the old hag wouldn't order for me. I kept my eye open over the years as this book can fetch a quite hefty price. I was not prepared to pay the king's ransom for this book. Well lo and behold I found a great copy for only $60. The pictures are of great quality and most of which I have never seen before in other published books on the Waffen SS.
As a collector of king and country soldiers I try to keep my eye open for a good book which will give me ideas for dioramas using king and country figures. I would definitely recommend this book, just don't pay an arm and a leg. It shows the Waffen-SS from the start of the war to the end. There are some who filled the ranks of the Waffen SS who acted like professional soldiers and did not subscribe to the monstrous ways of the Waffen SS. I can say this first hand as someone who served in the U.S. Armed Forces and was stationed in Germany and was able to meet first hand Soldiers of the Wehrmacht and the Waffen SS.
All in all, If you can find a good quality copy for a fair price, grab it.
