Hi Guys,
It’s been a couple of weeks since I last posted anything on the forums so here’s a little something to share with you…
As many of you know I am a big fan of Stanley Kubrick’s Vietnam epic ‘Full Metal Jacket’.
Over the years I’ve researched all kinds of information and visual references on the making of the movie which was mostly filmed at the disused and about to be demolished Beckton Gas Works in East London.
On the semi abandoned Beckton site Kubrick adapted many of the existing buildings to represent parts of Hue City also a section of USMC barracks at Da Nang, the headquarters of the 1st Marine Division.
One of the main features of the USMC camp was the main gate structure at the entrance of the base which was attacked on the first night of the TET Offensive by the Viet Cong or possibly the NVA.
I could not find any actual plans of the gate structure itself only photos of what appeared in the movie however it was fun to speculate and then build our own 1:30 scale version to be used as a backdrop for various new fighting vehicles that are ‘in the works’ for release in the coming year.
Meanwhile, here’s a little scene we’ve put together to illustrate the fun and excitement when comedian Bob Hope and a bevy of beautiful girls show up to entertain the troops…
Enjoy!
Andy
