For many years John Jenkins & Treefrog Treasures have done a give away of upcoming releases especially in Chicago.

What every happens to that grey army? Locked in a closet to remain a ghost or brought to life as a one of.

Well, here is the start of a thread on one of them.

A treefrog member recently advertised for sale one. Let me say that I do not collect these larger scale figures. But this one was one that I was impressed with when it did come out.
It's the landing barge for the Plains Of Abraham series. Thirty seven figures plus barge. For a very reasonable price I obtained it. After getting it I proceeded to examine it, and was very impressed but learned how John sculpted.

Here is the first photo of the barge, it's life being injected in it. It will represent the Louisberg Grenadiers being ferried to Montmorency Falls.

Hope you enjoy it.

Mike

Here is the next phase of my painting. It is a wonderful piece of sculpting, but the grenadiers are one piece castings so painting in the confined area is a challenge.

Plus it is interfering with my other projects but so is life.

I have mine displayed in my cabinet along side the production piece of that same figure

thank you...
I will enjoy watching your progress and final results...

37 figures is the full crew...

I'm not much of a figure painter and really admire the work some of the collectors do on here...

from the looks of your work bench...
this is not your first rodeo...

I have been lucky to be given a few of John's Masters and many of them are pre-production, so when I paint them I don't have his original as a copy.
I provide him with feedback about the figures, and also use my resources as my guide for colours, sometimes slight different that his, but neither of us are wrong :)

I show them off on my website only when he has released them because some haven't made it to the production line ....yet ??

He's and example of a few that I've painted...

I have a gray master to ACE-08, Mannock's SE-5a. John gifted it to me a few years back when he visited the US. He was gracious enough to also sign the aircraft for me so there is no chance the model will ever be painted. It will remain in it's 'ghost gray' finish, displayed along side an actual finished version of the model. Quite a neat and unique item. --Al

John...

I have followed your painting of the gray masters/prototypes for years...

all of them are fantastic...

but the Portuguese 1st Cazadores are my favorites that you did...

followed by the 42nd Foot (Black Watch) Grenadiers...

you're so talented...I wish I could paint faces..

these are the two grey Masters that John generously gave me on two different occasions, a great privilege for me.

Carlo...
are you good at painting figures...
will you paint yours...
or leave them alone?

Mike, when my eyes were still good I was a decent painter, however I love these masters in original mold and I prefer to hold them as they are.

Carlo...
I have finished painting one figure (metal) in my life...
other than some plastic Conte Spartans...
that I sold on Ebay...
and Spartans were easy...
cause their eyes were covered by a helmet...

actually it was a repaint...
top to bottom...
in the picture...
the middle figure is a Heritage figure made by Martin Tabony...
the height and girth was very similar to the JJD's Sudan figures that are on the left and right...
but I wanted it to match the JJD's paint colors...
matching the colors took a little time...
but everything was easy...
except the eyes...
I must have repainted them 10 times to get them decent looking...
I can't paint eyes...
still he turned out okay...

like you say...
it's all about the young eyes...
years ago...
I was trying to paint some metal knights...
wearing a jeweler's magnifying loop...
struggling with seeing it...
my friend was watching me...
she was much younger than me...
and asked if she could try one...
young eyes rule...
she did a way better job than me...

I have a grey master of an Indian playing lacrosse, and the grey prototypes of two tanks.

In addition, John was kind enough to give me one of three painted masters of the Death of Gordon set (with the stairs). John is a true friend, and I would never sell any of them. They are all on display with my regular production JJD Collection, right next to the Culloden Diorama he made for the launch of that series and gave me at the Chicago Show where he launched his Jacobites.

Here are some photos of my prototypes. The little green guy is an actual sculpture John Jenkins made during a sculpting demonstration at a New York Symposium:

Here's my TM Terrain Custom Diorama in which resides the JJD painted prototype (I believe he said one of 3) "Death of Gordon" stairs and figures given to me be John when he stayed at my house a few years ago:

That's a beautiful set Louis.

Louis...

I always wondered who ended up with Dave's diorama...

I was so impressed with it...
that I made on myself...

Dave was very helpful in my construction...
exchanging numerous emails on "how to do" questions...

Looks great Mike!😎😎

I sold it years ago at the Texas Show...
a Frogger bought it...
Dave was really generous on helping with construction issues...
treated me really nice...
glad you got his...
it looks awesome!

I couldn’t agree more, Dave is as nice as he is talented.

Slowly working on the barge, almost finished the jackets, but now have to paint the lace. This is a real challenge especially since getting in between the arms is not easy. Hopefully this will be ready for the Ontario Model Soldier Society Show in June. The pipe band kept getting in the way. This is what 95% of my collection is about.
