Where is the RED BARON MOVIE ? (1 Viewer)

I think the film premiered in Germany in April this year. I do not know any other details. -- Al

Wasn't he shot down by an Australian infantry soldier?

Bloody Aussies. Can't take them anywhere! :D

Evidence would indicate that, yes, he was shot from the ground by either a MG or rifle manned by one outstanding Australian marksman. -- lancer

From what I read, the movie was a sympathetic telling of the story and it was a big hit in Germany. It also was supposed to have shown in Great Britain this last summer. Any comment from our UK friends? Lastly, I'm pretty sure The Red Baron got Snoopy, not the other way around. Some rumor that Woodstock was of Australian lineage and that he got von R from the ground. -- lancer

It looks great. I can hardly wait to see it here, although it may be something, like Brotherhood of the Wolf, that has a very limited (or no) US release and you end up having to watch on disk.

Looking into this further, it appears that there was an English speaking version of the film and that a German only PAL version dvd release has been made. Nothing yet for a US version. I really hate the region coding crap on disks; it is actually a bit better for blue ray since many are not region locked.

I just saw a "special" DVD a friend has of The Red Baron, at least the 1st hour until we were called for dinner. Sorry I didn't see the ending. Good young cast. I'm not sure if all the details are historically correct but nothing looked cheap. CGI of combat was good. Some fictional scenes were put in of von Richthofen meeting Brown several times. I don't know how they handled who shot him down. I'd say it was worth the wait.

Notes from Wikipedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Red_Baron_(film)

"Der Rote Baron is a German production filmed in the English language With an estimated budget of 18 million euros, it remains is one of the most expensive and at the same time lowest-grossing film in German history. It premiered on 31 March 2008 in Berlin and was released a week later in the German theatres. Fewer than 100,000 movie-goers saw the film in the first week, causing the film to miss the Top 3. In the second week it dropped to No. 10. In the third week the film was gone from the top ten."

Reviews

"The reviews after the first public performances of the film were mainly negative, criticized in particular the high level of historical inaccuracy. The fictitious love story between Richthofen and Nurse Käte was described as having little factual basis. The film was openly criticized at the Berlin premiere. According to Schweighöfer, Tom Cruise, with whom he starred in Valkyrie, enjoyed the film immensely. The choreography and technical design of the dogfight sequences and the period equipment used in the film received high praise."

Historical Accuracy

"In addition, noted Richthofen biographer Castan, described the film as making Richthofen, "A romantic war hero surrenders to his doubts about what he is doing." In his eyes, however, the historic Richthofen was a radically different man in temperament. In reality, von Richtofen's stoic reserve was an essential characteristic in contrast to the film's more emotionalistic portrayal of him. These criticisms reveal that historians regard the film primarily as legend."

Sounds pretty much like the same kind of treatment the historical material got in "Pearl Harbor", and from the review Scott quoted, I wouldn't feel like I need to spend the money for the disc.

So is it on DVD now ?

The film trailer looks good - what the heck - how many WWI films do we have out there ? I will buy it.

I've had a look online and the only place I can find it is on Amazon Germany (surprise surprise).

I didn't realise that Lena Headley was in it, she's currently playing Sarah Connor in the new Terminator series.

As she is a British actress was the film filmed in english and the german version is dubbed into german or is it the other way round?

Don't know, but I'm still picturing her in '300'. Nice. :)

Spitfrnd, there is a website that gives you instructions on how to unlock your DVD player enabling it to play discs from all regions.

It's very easy.

It worked for me. I recommended it to a Pommie workmate who had some UK discs and it worked for him too.

Thanks General. I understand that this release is PAL only. Does it work for that as well?
