Ok so I've succumbed to the messenger set, but which Emperor is the figure supposed to portray ?

Going by the Messenger's kit, my best bet would be Trajan ! If so hopefully TG will produce and we'll have his Nephew Hadrian joining him before too long since he was Legate of the I Minerva against the Dacians in Trajan's second campaign against them !

I have the set but I'm calling it a Legate and his Tribune. The emperor would not be wearing the same armor as the Tribune nor would they have the same color cincticulus.

This is what they speak about ( Trajan is in the center )

"Picture the scene, the Roman army sends out a scouting party looking for the Barbarians whereabouts, only one man returns to give news to the Emperor, he points to a hurriedly drawn map on the ground showing their location. Tomorrow battle will commence, so long as the Barbarians do not find them first! Makes a fantastic diorama piece and will go well with our Roman tent and other ancillaries to follow later this year. ROM081 'The Messenger' set is as follows: Roman Emperor Roman Tribune Roman Legionnaire in scale armour. Normally the above would be $55 per figure giving you a grand total of $165, combined we are offering them at a special price of $150, saving you $15. The UK price will be £125 which will include VAT. Each Messenger figure set comes with a shield and 2 x Pilum representing his legion, the A version with red shield, the B version with the 30th Legion and C version with 9th Legion shield. This is a limited edition set in all variants with 100 pieces worldwide of the A, 50 sets of the B and 50 of the C versions being made."

Good call ! Though the Tribune seems to have had a scare to have turned his hair that colour at his age !{eek3}

Check

Armors are not the same, the center one is more elaborate . It's not on parade, but a campaign . Same tunic, not same breeches .
The emperor would not wear flashy gold armor ( IMHO )

The armor looks to be Bronze to my eye; but photos can deceive! Very nice vignette whomever the senior officer is, the Imperator or a Legate.

Taking a closer look at the figures it is noticeable that the center figure definitely has gold armor. The pic above is deceiving though because it almost looks like the figure holding the helmet is wearing gold and the center figure bronze. As far as how elaborate the body armor is, it probably could swing either way. The figure with the helmet which is suppose to be the tribune has the bronze armor with decoration on it while the supposed emperor has gold armor. Ideally, I would prefer the emperor to have the gold armor with the decoration on it while the figure with the helmet is left w/o decoration on his body armor. Also the figure holding the helmet has his sheath/gladius on the wrong side. I wont throw out my two cents on this Tribune helmet since none have been recovered as far as I know. I would have to disagree with you on the fact that you don't believe the emperor would be distinguishable. There is quite a bit of documentation that shows commanders of rank wore different colors not only on parade but into battle as well. Legates themselves have been distinguished as wearing decorated helmets and armor with embroidered cloaks. Senior commanders were said to have worn purple or white, Scipio himself wore purple, Crassus wore purple at Carrhae, Sextus pompeius wore Blue or Purple at Naulochus. Rome was always big on status and rank. Roman Sumptuary laws were enforced through most of the republic and certain colors such as Tyrian purple were continued through the empire. Regardless, the cincticulus would be of different color. This is just my opinion though and it is an argument like the age old question, what color were Roman Legionary tunics?

Nice close up thanks.
The Tribune is looking older than the Emperor figure now, who if Trajan would be in early fifties for Dacia !

TG's Rom059 figure, whether it was intentional or not to my eye it does have a touch of the Flavian dynasty features about it, which I like.

How about Titus and Domitian?

Titus was the Flavian I was thinking off as his busts do feature a more square head like his father Vespasian and would fit in well with his time with the Legions in Germany, Britain and Judea under his father and then taking over from him in finishing putting down the revolt there.

It certainly could be used to portray Vespasian in the days of the Claudian Invasion of Britain or even his command in Judea at a pinch .

Domitian from busts I've seen wasn't quite so thick set.
