A lot has been said about this company and there business practice but they have consistently released some of the more imaginative and awesome sculpted figures around. I like the darker painting style of the WWII figures but they do need to lighten them up a little bit to make the Mr. Ortiz's work stand out more. I hope Richard Conte II compensates him well because I know a couple of companies that would kill to have his creativity on their Team.

I for one will again, buy there next releases, how about you?

Let me say this first, I love Contes plastic, those new GI,s, especially the Ortiz sculpted figures are the best out there.
However, I avoided buying his early metal years ago, but when the hype came out about new Conte metal for WW2 I picked up his older sets and then bought the first few new sets when they came out.
With the arrival of each set I kept trying to convince myself that I liked them, but after about the fifth set I said woa, be honest, you really don,t like these.
I hate the dark shade of paint, and the faces on some of the figures make them looked like crazed madmen.
I think the Omaha Beach set has the worst faces of any, so Carlos I have to disagree about Conte, I,ll buy his plastic any day, but I think I,m thru with his metal.

They've got my vote. I display K&C, but I play with Conte. I think the Conte poses have always been first class and the sculpting has gotten better and better. The latest additions (GIs) are nothing short of superb. Ken Osen and Robert Ortiz have worked wonders, especially when combined with the the improved manufacturing process for the plastics.

The 'but' here is I, like you, think that the painting on the metal relaeases doesn't show the figures off to their best and as you say, should lighten up a bit. I'm also not a big fan of the SS camo on the latest metal figures. It's 'blobby' and doesn't represent a camo scheme I'm familiar with, and there are so many interesting ones to choose from.

I've got all of the plastic GIs (+ reinforcements coming) as well as all the pieces from the playsets, and will probably be purchasing the later additions.

Am I missing something as I was not aware any new Omaha sets were on the way aside from the two already out; Carlos, let me know.

I'm with Simon as the German camo on their last release was awful, looks nothing like any camo scheme I have ever seen, not impressed at all. The figures aren't bad, but the camo is. I've done very well with the lastest batch of US Airborne sets, but the "Platoon part one" set of comic book character figures is brutal, the guy firing the Lewis gun is plain awful. As Gary said, I am concerned about the faces, too dark, too distorted in some cases..............

There's the third set - the BOSS (Bloody Omaha Signature Series), which looks like it will be 4 set terrain pieces with what I'm guessing will be painted metal figures, which link up with each other. No prices or dates on these yet.

I will be purchasing the new Bloody Omaha Series. Conte's poses are first rate, sculpting superb. Painting could be better. I agree with another poster here, they are a little dark, lighten them up a but Richard. I find even the last series of GI.s good too. He is frequently making deals with consumers to purchase his set too, I like that as well. I had the chance to visit with him in Chicago this year. I found him to be passionate about toy soldiers and history. And in my opinion wants to hear feedback from his customers. Count me as a Conte WW2 metal fan!

Make of this what you will...

I've been accused of being too robust in criticizing Conte business practices. So be it. I now offer my most recent -- AND LAST -- experience with Conteco. Make of it what you will.

Though I've continually found the promises and misrepresentations to be off-putting, Conte's PRODUCTS have been in the main terrific. With that in mind, immediately after OTSN wife Judy ordered both Omaha Beach playsets for me for christmas. She ordered both of them simultaneously to take advantage of the incentive of the free 100 extra troops.

The sets arrived very quickly.

HOWEVER, they were missing the playset boxes, as were all sets sold at OTSN. Explanation....problem with the printer, and the boxes would be shipped out very soon.

Tis now the first week in January (OTSN was in September) and still no boxes. Pretty serious problem with the printer...wonder what takes more than four months to print up some box art. When inquiring, Judy was told they would be shipped before Christmas. DIDN'T HAPPEN, and of course that meant that the 'Christmas Presents' were somewhat less than terrific.

More to the point, still no 'free' extra soldiers, even though they've been being sold and shipped for some time I guess. When we inquired about THAT situation, we were told that Conte was holding the extra soldiers...to be shipped WITH the boxes, to save shipping costs.

So, for two playsets ordered several months ago...as Christmas presents, and not inexpensive ones at that...they are STILL not complete, nor have the 'free' soldiers arrived either...but the credit card was processed immediately, of course.

Finally, when Judy realized that the sets would NOT be complete for Christmas, she wanted to return them unopened...absolutely agreeing to pay the return shipping costs. She was told she could do so, but ONLY if she agreed to a $100 restocking charge.

And STILL no boxes, and STILL no free soldiers...

...and absolutely positively no more orders sent to Conte.

Make of it what you will.

Sorry about that man, it appears like another example of poor business practices from Conte direct.

It also demonstrates the enormous benefits of doing business through a trusted dealer. They mitigate risk and provide you with the best service. It's possible in this case that the playset was and still remains available through Conte direct.

Carlos

Hey Terry, sorry to here about another problem with RC. Do you have any ideal when hobby bunker's forum will be back up?

Shiloh...

I think the main Hobby Bunker site says that hopefully it will be back up yet this week. Don't quite know what 'hackers' would want with a small toy soldier forum. I know that in other fields the SPAMMERS completely take over forums, including especially porno-spam. Maybe it was that kind of attack.

Hopefully, for those who use that forum, it will be back in operation as soon as anticipated.

Still waiting here as well but I was told it was not certain if the boxes, 100 extra troops and the extra Higgens boat would make it before Christmas.I bought these for my son and I for Christmas and all but the promised freebie stuf was here fast. We're planning to have 200 GI's painted before June 6 , so at least the GI's are here for the old man to slave away panting. It would have been nice to have it all here sooner but it was a good deal so I dont mind waiiting for the extras. I can fully understand Terry's frustration.
My buddy Gerry tried to have these delivered for Christmas for him and his son as well but it didnt happen because Conte didnt want to have to ship twice.Told he would just have to wait for the extra items to arrive. He canceled his order when it became apparent it wasnt going to make it for the Holidays.
Fubarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Just had a wander on to Conte's site and for anyone who might be interested, they appear to have the BOSS Omaha 3rd set in and shipping. This is the one with the 4 interlocking (?) terrain pieces and 20 painted metal GIs.

Looks good, but at $400 for the 4 sets (incl. multiple purchase discount), I'm not sure they'll sell that quickly.

Now if they release those figures in plastic....

Simon

On some of Joe Bakers dios, he has mixed in some of this next wave of GIs in to the mix, and they appear to be plastic, so I'm hopeful. But how long will it be.....?

Tough question Simon,

If I could only get the figures WITHOUT the rest of the stuff that comes with it at a reduced price then it would be easy question to answer.

Carlos

Carlos,

I agree, as they compliment the last batch of GIs very well. But $400 is a lot of money to go splashing out.
Looking at the more recent WWII sets however, I think it's unlikely that we'll see the metal figures seperately. They've nearly all been part of a set with some building work or bases.

I guess the decision on whether they'll be released as plastic, may be determined on how well the first sets of GIs sell, as the production costs for plastics seem to be a touch on the high side. Here's hoping.
